introducing Steem-notifer - Desktop app for Steem notifications
Steem-notifer is a minimal desktop/menubar app, it is configurable to show incoming notifications for you steem account.
Steemit.com + busy.org have no native notification system. By default, steem-notifiter will take a single username and show a notification when you receive a comment on any of your posts or replies to any of your comments.
➡️ Code is available on Githib 🙌 🎉
How it works
steem-notfier is an Electron App, Electron created off the back of Githubs popular code editor Atom.io (also build Electron) allows for fast desktop development with web technologies. steem-notifier uses Electron and steem-js to interface with the steem blockchain and listens for relevant events. When events are processed on the blockchain steem-notifer then passes those onto the user in the form of a desktop notification. Notifications can be dismissed or click to view on steemit.com
The notifcation shows who commented and the start of their comment.
Desktop environments
By default electron is cross-platform. This project intended to create a cross-platform (win/os-x/linux) compatible app. For this initial version I have focussed on OSX (my dev platform), while it will work on windows the main window main feel out of place. Windows menubar is at bottom while osx is at the top. I will work to make this update along with others see below.
Thoughts for future development
- cross-platform compatibility
- multiple account support (think HootSuite)
- ability to reply directly and upvote in-app (would need to support wif key)
- history/feed of recent comments
- add notifications receiving transfers e.b SBD/STEEM
This is very much an initial v0.1 but I wanted to get the project started and see if there was any response to this type of app. I’ve not worked on a desktop style app for a couple years and thought learning some new functions of the steem API would be great to further my knowledge in both area.
I am pretty excited about this one as a project. I know everyone loves their browser but I already have too many tabs open. If I could create a minimal native app I think it could be a hit.
Let me know what you think of steam-notifier, would you use a desktop app? do you think it works better as a passive notification-only system or should it do posting/replying etc?

I agree nice contribution
But it shows the same error as mentioned above maybe you have some dependencies missing
Thanks for checking out the project, glad you like it. I've patched the dependency issue now, forgot to include some deps I had left over locally. Tested with a fresh clone and should run now. Still some issues to work out but that is why this is v0.1. More to come soon.
Thanks for taking the time to look at my project.
You're 100% right I was missing some dependeceies. These have been included now from your PR. I've updated the read.me to explain why there is also the local depencecy for
node-notifier. I am looking for a better solution to this. I'll add below for anyone reading.I've also added MIT licence so peopel can feel comfortable to work on this code feely.
Appreciate you taking time to include the depenceies and get it working on windows. Lots more ideas to come for this app.
Ace, thanks for getting back to this one so quickly and thanks for the pr. ⚡️
