Walk with me in the Costa Rican rainforest.

in #walkwithme7 years ago (edited)

It was the first day of the new year and a great sunny morning for an exploratory walk in the jungle. To be reasonably safe and not torn to shreds by vicious undergrowth it is advisable to stick to paths wherever possible. There are snakes to be wary of always even on cutback pathways.

Walking through the jungle is a combination of old and new pathways made by the mountain dwelling Indians and the passing occupants, some more recent and others quite ancient, who stay a while and leave again for any number of reasons. It is a wild, mildly dangerous existence and both predictable and unpredictable from one moment to the next.

The aroma of degrading and pure living vegetation, both leafy and floral mixing together Is one of the nicest smells to me and nothing compares to the jungle in this respect. Pine woods in Northern Europe are similarly wonderful but this tropical forest really had the edge over anything else I have experienced thus far.

Coming across fallen trees like this is quite common. This one was a little on the large side to get around as there was kind of a precipice on the one side. The slippery damp ground can make the steep raveen sides precarious at times and as I always walk holding my camera I have to be super careful not to have accidents.

The constant cycle of birth and death and rebirth is very obvious here. New tree seeds are sprouting constantly as birds and animals help spread their seeds as they munch their way daily through the treetops dropping half eaten fruit and nuts in their path.

I am constantly intrigued with some birds abilities to frequent trees of the same colour as themselves to give them the ultimate camouflage from predators. They seem to know what colour they are.

The rate of growth of plants here is phenomenal and machetes are carried by most people and employed regularly to cut back growth to stop paths from quickly disappearing.

The sea view from the mountainside makes the steep walk worth every step.

And so to rest.
