"대의정성" 이란 말은 손사막이 의덕(醫德)의 수양을 중요시 하였기 때문에 후배 의사들을 위하여 쓴 글로써 "훌륭한 의사는 마당히 환자를 치료함에 있어 정성이 있어야 한다." 는 뜻이다.

정성이란 말을 풀이해 보면 정(精)은 의학에 대한 말로써 정익구정(精益求精)을 요한다는 뜻이다. 다시 말하면 더 잘 할려고 의술 연마에 계속 힘쓰라는 뜻이다. 성(誠)은 환자에 대한 말로써 환자를 치료함에 있어 반드시 성심성의(誠心誠意) 껏 치료해야 된다는 말이다. 대의정성이란 말은 중국의 한의과 대학 교재인 "의고문(醫古文)" 에 나오는 말로써 한의과 대학생들의 필수과목 중 하나이다.

손사막이 사망한 후 사람들은 오대산(五臺山) 속에 사당(祠堂)을 건립하였으며 오대산을 약왕산(藥王山)이라고 불렀다. 약왕이 세상을 떠난지 1326 년이 지난 현재까지도 매년 봄이 돌아오면 약왕의 기념행사를 성대하게 거행하고 있다.
