Moroccan Jews conquer America

How a small community of Moroccan Jews from Tetouan will migrate to Algeria first, and scatter in America. At the origins of an exodus.

Long before the mass emigration of Moroccan citizens of Israelite confession in Israel, Canada and France after the founding of the State of Israel (1948), the independence of Morocco (1956), then the Six-Day War (1967) and finally that of Yom Kippur (1973), there was another emigration, fluid and considerable, but much older that emptied part of northern Morocco of its Jews. This is the emigration in the nineteenth century Moroccan Jews Hispanic and descendants, according to their beliefs, from Castile to the time of Al-Andalus, first to Oran (French Algeria), then to Spain and the New World, in Latin America.
This emigration is generally considered as the fact of the Jews of Tetouan, and to a lesser extent of their co-religionists Tangier. Living in two cities having easy contact with foreigners, these Israelites were, unlike the Jews of the interior of Morocco, less traditionalist and therefore less attached to their mellahs, their temples and their Moroccan past. If Tetouan, for example, was called "Little Jerusalem," the religiosity of its Jewish inhabitants was not excessive. They considered themselves "megorachim", that is to say, the descendants of the Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492, spoke haketiya, a Judeo-Spanish dialect, or the Tetouan, another derivative of the old Castilian.
