Canary Islands
Located in north-western Morocco, the Canary Islands (Spanish: Islas Canarias) form an archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean and occupy an area of 7447 km². The archipelago is about 150 km from the Moroccan coast and more than 1000 km from the south of Spain. Although the Canaries are part of one of the 17 Autonomous Communities of Spain under the name Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias, they are located in Africa.
The archipelago of the Canary Islands consists of seven main islands, in addition to some deserted islands (Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Legranza and Lobos): Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and Hierro. From the administrative point of view, the islands are divided into two provinces: Las Palmas (the eastern islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (the western islands: Tenerife, La Gomera, Hierro and La Palma). The archipelago has two capitals since 1927: Santa Cruz (Tenerife) and Las Palmas (Gran Canaria).
With the enclaves of Ceuta (in the north of Morocco) and Melilla (on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco), it's all that remains of the old Spanish empire. The Canary Islands are recognized by the African Union as "African" territory occupied by a "foreign" power.
