Speculating on Comics 01.30.2019

in #comics7 years ago

I did ok last week according to Comic Book Invest Top 10; I managed a copy or two of the WalMart Superman 7, and the Immortal Hulk 12. I don't get Tom King; as I mentioned early through comments on a YouTube channel, the guy pulls the upcoming Poison Ivy Heroes in Crisis cover because it's too violent, yet opens up a WalMart DC comic with Lois Lane refusing to beg for her life, only to see Lex Luthor put a bullet in her face. Yeah, call me confused. I'm a cost accountant however by trade, so maybe my ability to decipher comic book stories/imagery isn't where it needs to be. Yet, I'd remind all; being a cost accountant is a pretty vague/ambiguous trade. Maybe I should start writing Batman too...

As for the Immortal Hulk? Whoa, get on this story already if you have not been keeping up with it. This is the stuff that Carl Jung, the collective unconscious, and Gnostics would probably be thinking about had they had a Big Green Creature/Bruce Banner in their life time. I'm sensing an Alan Moore type run here, with movies and/or television adaptations on the way. I want to keep rereading these issues, but I'm afraid my oily skin will ruin their value. Sad!

All that sad, let's review this week's upcoming titles.

Picks for Flips

Wonder Woman 63 Shirahama Variant

This one is hot, hot, hot...DC is keeping their variant demand high. First it was Harley Quinn, then Catwoman, then Wonder Woman, and now Wonder Woman once again. I'm keeping my copy long term, but if you so inclined, grab two copies Wednesday if you want to make a quick profit. These were already selling for $13 USD on eBay this past weekend. It's a gorgeous cover, regardless whether or not you are a Wonder Woman fan or not. It's most certainly fantastic art (Bill Maher be damned).

Items for My Long Term Collection

Doctor Strange 10 Frank Miller Variant

I love Doctor Strange, and I love Frank Miller. I haven't kept up with the series, but I do love the cover on this one. It looks like art directly from the 1960's. And I believe this ultimately the 400th Doctor Strange title.

The Flash 63 Chaykin Variant

Another one that fast sold out online this past week. You could possible flip this one, as eBay presales are now in the $7.50 USD range, but I love the current story and this wonderful retro cover. That's two issues in a row now where the Rogue's galleries are included in beautiful, full color. It makes me "pine" now for that old Artgerm The Flash vs Reverse Flash 8 Variant that I never got, but see that it goes for over $50 USD. I'm hoping a couple of upcoming Flash variants gets those other speedsters on the cover soon. And speaking of Artgerm...

Batgirl 31 Artgerm Variant

There isn't much buzz on this one yet; you can still get this for cover price online. Maybe folks are over the Batgirl variants, or maybe some are burned out on Artgerm? I don't know, but I'm picking up two copies if possible for my little girl's long term collection.

Detective Comics 997 Stelfreeze Variant

I'll pick up the cover A too (see first image above). Will the New Gods play part in the lead up to 1000? Or is it another homage to Mister Miracle? I don't know, but the series is great, and let's not forget the Arkham Knight is due for a first appearance very soon. Between this series and King's Batman, is there a possible more complex character in comic books right now? Aside from the Immortal Hulk, that is?

Edgar Allen Poes Snifter of Terror 4

What a bizarre series, but I like it. I wonder what EAP thinks of it as he looks upon the world of literature and culture today from some other plane of existence? Approval or disinterest? If he happens to be a fan of Steven Spielberg, maybe he likes this series too. I don't think these will have much value longer term, but there a curious entry into this medium and for fans of it.

Other Items of Interest

Hex Wives 4

This series has been ok thus far, but feel like it's a little slow. The concept is still entertaining and open to grandiose possibilities. Even the naked elderly witch bound to a wheelchair was interesting. We'll see where it goes; I still think this series is ripe to be picked up by some type of television/film deal. It's no Sabrina, but what is, really?

Alterna Releases

This week's $1.50 USD offerings include the following:

I've been enjoying this indie publisher's titles; I recently finished up Blood Realm's 3 part mini series and thought it was a great story. I'll plan to keep picking these up because a) they are $1.50 each and b) I love to read.

Oh yeah, and I'll grab Heroes in Crisis this week too; Batgirl and Harley Quinn ready to take on the world? I'm curious where that will lead to.

That's it for this week's thoughts. As always, please drop a line and let me know what you think about the above, whether I'm missing anything key, or have any recommendations. Thanks much, and good luck to everyone this coming Wednesday at their local shops, especially in respect to that Wonder Woman variant. That might be on my list of books to slab this year...

Sort:

Quality picks my friend!!! Good luck on the hunt tomorrow.

One that I was going to add today that seems to be blowing up overnight is the Mattina B&W Spawn 293 variant this week; that one has a $2.99 cover price and is already bidding over +$35 USD this morning...madness I tell you!

Thanks for the comment as always!
