Seed Swap with @papa-pepper!

in #homesteading5 years ago

Thank you @papa-pepper for suggesting a bartering of seeds. We couldn't be happier to swap seeds with you! We received your package in the mail Friday and it came through safe and sound. It was so fun to see the quintessential Papa-Pepper artwork on the package when it arrived which made it all that much more special to receive :)

I am really excited about this swap - it happened because of Homesteaders Co-op, but it happened outside of the Co-op. And that is perfect because Homesteaders Co-op doesn't take profit from sales anyway, and why not be a venue for bartering? Homesteaders Co-op was a perfect place for us to see what seeds we each have and then transact with each other by email in peer to peer fashion.

Papa Pepper has a lot of seeds that are both very practical but also unique. It was fun to learn about some plants that I was not familiar with and be inspired to try them out! I'll post the seeds we received and you'll just have to browse The Pepper Family Homestead store on Homesteaders Co-op to learn more about each and see the other seeds, herbs and crafts that they carry!

Chinese Red Noodle Bean

You have to see these beans to believe it! They are long, productive and pest resistant. I opted for the red/purple variety - I figured it would be easier to see them at harvest time ;) Those beans look tasty, I am tempted to cook them to see how they taste... but no I have to wait and grow them!

Sugar Rush Peach Peppers

Where would I be if I didn't try one of Papa Pepper's pepper seeds? I used to be quite a chili head, and that is actually what got me into gardening. Now I am wanting to get back into growing a diversity of peppers again. This one looks like a winner being both sweet and spicy and a good medium size... it seems like it will be all around good for cooking, hot sauce, roasting, etc.

Rabbit Tobacco

This plant is native to the Northeast and I don't believe it grows around here in the Northwest. It looks like a worthwhile medicinal being especially useful for the lungs as an expectorant, throat ulcers, respiratory complaints (may be of interest to you @nateonsteemit). Its also useful as a poultice for bruises and a number of other remedies. Wow those seeds are so small! I better be careful :)

seeds4.jpg

Snake Gourd

These edible gourds get huge! I am betting this is a staple food at The Pepper Family Homestead with many mouths to feed. This abundant food source looked very worthwhile to try to Idyllwild and myself. I love that it is a gourd and won't cross with our maxima or pepo squashes, being that it is its own species. Wow the seeds look crazy! Like little alien space ships or fat surf boards.

seeds6.jpg

I was also excited to hear that @papa-pepper had some Korean and Chinese Goji berry plants that he was willing to take cuttings of and share with us, as well as some extra black Goji seeds! I couldn't pass that up.

seeds8.jpg

The cuttings arrived in good shape! In order to root the cuttings I went to harvest some wild willow from down the street to make some willow water.

seeds9.jpg

I took a few small branches and put them into a cup of water with the goji cuttings. I marked the chinese goji so that I can distinguish it from the korean goji cuttings. The willow twigs will release hormones that help stimulate root growth from the nodes on the cuttings. This is the easiest, cheapest and most sustainable way I know to root cuttings. Now I will just refresh the water and stir it from time to time to introduce oxygen until I see roots growing!

Thank you for seed swapping with us @papa-pepper! Everyone I highly recommend checking out the Pepper Family Homestead store on Homesteaders Co-op. The seed amounts are generous and I can trust the quality because @papa-pepper is doing germination rates. Everything looks very fresh and full of life. And you can be sure you are supporting a hard working family that is producing quality products sustainably. Besides their seeds they are also offering decor, hand knit scrunchies and herbs! I think they are still adding more products regularly and will also be adding products throughout the season. Check them out and check out all the other wonderful vendors on Homesteaders Co-op!

Yes, I've been eyeing the rabbit tobacco seeds as well. How exciting you're propagating goji from cuttings. That's pretty inspiring... I just planted a couple young goji bushes yesterday. :)

@papa-pepper, hang in there. I'm saving some steem for you! :) And I'm headed to get you some bamboo seed heads soon too. Been busy, but I haven't forgotten!

It is getting to be that time I'm thinking about starting some seeds as well. It looks like you got a good haul.

It sure is time for us temperate climate folks :) Thank you!

Oh wow, I love that you guys bartered kind of through Homsteaders Co-op!

I was interested in the red noodle beans but my plate is pretty full this year... we'll try new things later!

Thanks for making my learn something everyday happen so early today... I didn't know willow branches can act as a root hormone of some kind... that's pretty awesome!

It makes sense I guess, it does grow on its own pretty much anywhere from cuttings.

Yes you don't have to buy chemical rooting powder if you have some willow handy! Last year I made a bucket of willow water for rooting all kinds of cuttings. It works pretty well :)

I'm not yet familiar with willows unless it's a wheeping willow! I know we don't have any right on the property but there are plenty to be fpund elswhere! I'll remember this one for sure and try it.

Thanks again

Weeping willow would work just fine! I am pretty sure any willow will work to make willow water. Good luck finding a willow ;) If you do, get some growing from cuttings because they take root very easily and then you will have your own willows!

Yes excellent idea, I want to eventually make a living fence too! Hey thanks for to benefits of being a contributor... I just got my rewards!

I love the concept of living fences, I would love to experiment with them too on my future property if the need arises. You're very welcome for the beneficiary rewards! I hope it is extra motivation to keep contributing you thoughts and quality content :)

Haha Yes it is motivating in deed!! I"ll have that post ready very soon!

Thank you

Wow wow this is great!! Swapping seeds and cuttings is already happening on Steemit :) We try to facilitate it on Steemit with this @planthub account and also would like to support posts related to plants and gardening gain reward.

Thanks for the nice comment @planthub :) You may be interested to see our https://homesteaderscoop.com (@homesteaderscoop) where homesteaders are starting to list their seeds for STEEM/SBD. There are only 3 vendors selling seeds at the moment but I feel that will grow in time. I will follow your account with keep interest, I think that our audience would benefit from what you are doing and vice versa :)

Homesteaderscoop is great @sagescrub!! I (@akipponn working in the background of @planthub also a member of @needleworkmonday) am knitting a linen body towel with bio European linen as I couldn't find an ideal product. Some are too thick, rough etc. As it looks successful, I thought about selling some on Etsy but homesteaderscoop sound nice :) :)

That is really beautiful @akipponn! Very nice handiwork. Homesteaders Co-op is not mutually exclusive, our vendors are certainly welcome to participate in any other marketplace at the same time if they wish. Though some of our vendors prefer Homesteaders Co-op over etsy for various reasons! You can check out https://homesteaderscoop.com/sell to learn more and apply if you think you are a good fit.

I want a pepper grow report! :]

Nice, you've got the package!

I just got mine yesterday! So excited, and love the Co-op! Also, peppers were what got me into gardening,LOL. How cool!

That's great! I am glad it arrived ok :) Thanks again for suggesting the trade!

I have some old chinensis pepper seeds from 2015ish that I am going to try to grow out. If I get some yield this year I'll gladly send some seeds :) I am also browsing Seed Savers Exchange for a few interesting varieties to try this year. Idyllwild is all about the Padrones for roasting... She says she doesn't care about any other pepper. Now that is true love for a pepper!
