Movie Review : Jersey (2022)

There can be two things in the case of remake movies. Otherwise it will be good and in some cases better than the original movie or not worth watching at all. Actor Sahid Kapoor's first release in 2022, the 2019 film of the same name by the same director, hangs between good and evil. If you have seen the movie Naani, then every scene of this movie will be familiar to you. And if you start with jersey, you will have a different kind of experience.

Although the movie Jersey is about cricket to the whole world, it has a beautiful story between father and son. It is a story of a second chance, a story of keeping the human spirit alive despite the odds and making sacrifices to make his dreams come true. The film stars Shahid Kapoor in the lead role of Arjun Talwar, a 36-year-old cricketer who leaves the game to make his wife (Mrunal Thakur) and child (Ranit Kamra) his everything. Taking a person out of his game cannot take the game out of a person. Same thing happened with Shahid Kapoor. Life takes an unexpected turn and brings Arjun back to his old pitch. However, this time the situation is different and the expectations are much higher. Struggling to live up to age and the expectations of his wife and children, Arjuna faces one of the biggest battles of his life. The jersey will tell whether Arjun can hit a six or is clean bowled in the second innings of his life.

Director Gautam Tinnanuri has not messed with the actual plot of the movie and as the movie progresses you will realize that its characters are all connected to North India. Jersey is not traditionally a sports movie, where hitting a four or six will elicit a roar of applause or a standing ovation. The story of this movie is very serious and to reach the depth of this movie you must watch the movie. Arjun's anger, his guilt, his failure in life and as the character progresses Shahid gets into Arjun's character. Shahid portrays Arjun's agony brilliantly. But the director must be credited for this.

Shahid Kapoor is perfect in portraying Arjun's conflict-pain, struggle with life. After Haider and Kamin, his performance in this movie deserves praise. Mrunal's performance as Arjun's wife Vidya is truly beautiful, the sometimes cold and sometimes hot-tempered Vidya, who fails to maintain a good relationship with her husband due to the irony of fate. It will be seen how Vidya and Arjuna's love turns into lack-conflict and quarrel. Ranit Kamrao plays the role of Shahid and Vidya's son beautifully. Pankaj Kapoor's performance as the coach was also spot on.

On the other hand, Jersey is a very long movie and struggles with its pacing, especially the first half of the movie is quite long. After introducing Arjuna, it will make the audience curious to understand why he is so helpless and sad. But the climax is too rushed, the movie ends before Arjun can be properly understood. Also, the cricket scenes in the second half won't win over the audience much. But Jersey is a solid effort by Shahid Kapoor, and it once again proves his prowess as an actor. The film Jersey is a must watch movie for the fans of the Shahid Kapoor.
