How can we teach the days of the week to the smallest of the house.

For any preschool and daycare child, the days of the week is one of the basic lessons you should learn. Because they are very small, learning costs them, so we must work hard. In order for the child to learn in a very funny way we can implement several games, drawings, audiovisual resources, among others.

For the youngest of the house, the days of the week are part of the time in which they perform activities such as going to school or going for a walk, eating ice cream, etc. However, they do not know the names of each day. The most relevant thing about the days of the week is that the terminal on Sunday, the week starts again and we repeat again. This repetitive cycle sometimes tends to confuse our children, so it is very important to perform many activities to make them easier to understand.

The main difficulty that a young child experiences when learning about yesterday, today and tomorrow, lies in the lack of practices about the past and its difficulty in creating a relationship with the future. It is very complicated for them but we can explain it in the following way:

  • Yesterday: tell him yesterday was before today. Try to relate it to what you did yesterday. For example: what did you do yesterday at school?.

  • Today: tell it is the current day and try to relate it to an activity you have planned for today. For example: Today there is soccer practice.

  • Tomorrow: tell him tomorrow will come after today. Mention an activity that is pending for tomorrow. For example: Tomorrow we are going to sing your cousin's birthday.

Strategies to teach the days of the week.

There are many strategies that we can implement, but the best part is that most of these can be done with recycled material.

  • Drawings in chains: we can draw a train with 7 wagons, let the child color it and in each wagon place the days of the week, we can also do it with a worm.

  • Roulette: Create a roulette that contains the days of the week, something similar to a clock.

  • Calendars: Together with the child perform a calendar, that they color it and in each day place the breakfast that will be eaten, cookies, fruits, what activity it touches, etc. In addition we can paste this calendar in your room.

  • Letter soup This activity is recommended for primary school children.

  • Use books: have books that talk about the days of the week and read them. If the child can read, then put it to read.

  • Games: Draw a hopscotch (with 7 frames), each frame identified with the days of the week. The child can sing the song while jumping. We can also do this game to learn numbers.

  • Songs: there are many songs on YouTube, let's sing songs of the days of the week with the children. Singing helps memorize, that is, the brain absorbs information. For example:

The days of the week are 7:

1. Monday.

2. Tuesday.

3. Wednesday.

4. Thursday.

5. Friday.

6. Saturday.

7. Sunday.

5 to study and two to rest.

To make learning easier, consider the following:

  1. Practice and repetition are the key to better learning.
  2. Teach the child that every time he gets up it's a new day.
  3. Explain to the child that seven days is a week and that when one week ends, another one begins.
  4. Show the child the differences between workdays and weekends: Working days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, are the days to go to school and parents to work and the Weekends: Saturday and Sunday, are the days to enjoy and relax, that is, there is no work or school.
  5. Learning does not include screaming or mistreatment.
  6. Always congratulate the child for each achievement and reward him, be it with a cake, a cookie, an ice cream, a ride, etc. This means for them an excellent reward to fight for.
