macOS High Sierra Obvious Improvement for my MacBook Air 2011

I observed macOS 10.13 High Sierra improve a lot to my 6-year-old MacBook Air 2011. It is faster, more complete in the features, and much more.

Before upgrading my MacBook Air 2011, I have been juggling about buying a new laptop. It is great when I know I will receive this 10.13 upgrade, but I am still holding off replacing the battery to my MacBook Air – who knows if it will severally slow down my machine, like what iOS did to my old iPad?

I am not doing a benchmark to justify my point. It is fast by every aspect that can be feel, and I have some ideas about why this happens.

APFS – Apple File System

Replacing the nearly 2-decade old HPS+, Apple File System is a complete reworked file system. Specifically made for modern flash-based storage environment, it offers improved integrity and checksum features that can help speed up file input-output operations while improving the overall file integrity. My feeling is loading large file is smoother, more responsive. Cloning a large file is also lightning fast as it works differently than before.

Metal 2 – Improved graphic rendering

Metal 2 speeds up graphic operations, even for my old integrated Intel Graphics. I might not play game faster, but for day to day use of my MacBook Air, I can feel the graphic transition is faster. Enough for me happy Steemit! My Google Chrome will no longer “think” when I try to load a web page. My CPU usage is lower thanks to a different way to render graphics and the memory usage is also lower than before.

Refined feature in every aspect

All the new features available in iOS related to common Apple application are reflected in macOS as well. Notes app received more features like iOS does; Mail app will be auto arranged side by side when you are replying email. Photos app has more feature to adjust your photos, what other things you want to ask for?

Multi-Lingual typing is a lot smoother

Using Taiwanese input method Cangjie was very slow to output a single character. Now, it is as fast as I typed as in Windows 10! I love it. I can type my article faster now. More advanced is Voice Dictation, it is Fast! I cannot believe my MacBook Air is now more usable than before.

It is still on my day 3 of using High Sierra. I must be able to discover more, I will write up more I think in the coming weeks.

My most happy aspect? I do not need to buy a new MacBook within next 365 days, Happy!~ ^_^
