After seeing @gavvet doing some posts on the South African border war from an air perspective, I decided to do some posts on the South-African weapon technology. Today I am featuring the G6 Self propelled Canon.
The G6 was developed in the 1970's and started production in the 1980's. More recently in April 2006,a newer version set a new world record for tubed artillery systems firing at a range of 75 km.
The G6 is a six wheeled, 6 wheel drive self propped Canon. It sports a 150 mm gun, with a range of over 50 km. The G6 is operated by a crew of 6 (driver in hull, gun captain, gunlayer/navigator, breech operator, loader and ammunition handler in turret).
The vehicle can reach a top speed of 90 km/h and has a range of 600 km. It sports a 518 horse power diesel engine, with a six speed gearbox and permanent 6 wheel drive. The cannon can swing on an 80 degrees arc and the elevation is from -5 to 75 degrees from the horizontal. The cannon can fire at a rate of 3 rounds per minute. The vehicle can carry 47 projectiles.
The video below is a very nice video showing some of its capabilities, this is a newer version, which needs less crew to operate.
The G6 has seen active action during the South African border war, and is a battle proven machine. The G6 has been exported to various countries, for example Oman and the UAE. This is one of the best mobile canons in the world.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it.
