The Sasol Solar Challenge is a BI-Annual event. This is the longest Solar Challenge in the world. The Dutch team won the previous event with over 4700 km covered. It takes place over 9 days and stop at the towns as shown on the route map.

The race takes place on public roads, and when the teams arrive at the destination for the day, they do loops for extra distance.

The Sonke team is the only school team and are from the St Alban’s College and St Augustine’s schools in South Africa. I like this little car, it is small with a lot of solar panels, it is obviously not as high tech as some of the others, but it is quite good looking!!

This is the Swiss team, they had a problem with their car and did not depart with the other cars, but they eventually got going with solar power, thus they will have to catch up!!

The car below is from Hong Kong from the City University of Hong Kong, this car only arrived one day before the start, and had a breakdown just after the start. They are in a different class than the rest of the cars.

The leader board after day 1! The leading teams did 645.5km. The Dutch and Japanese teams did the same distance, but at the moment the Japanese team is given position number 6 as they missed the cut off time at the end.
