We meet again: Morcon ng Batangas

in #food8 years ago (edited)

About a decade ago, there was this old man carrying what seems to be a pail.We eventually found out it’s filled with food he was selling.
It was a hot summer day so we asked him to take a seat under our Aratilis tree(Jamaica cherry tree).
My brother and I have a soft spot for old folks.
He asked us for a refill of cold water to his empty plastic bottle. As we gave him the refreshment he offered us his “Embutido/Morcon Batangas”.
I am not a fan of Embutido (Meatloaf).I usually saw those wrapped in foil but this meatloaf is different. It was neatly wrapped in banana leaves.
The aroma caught my curiosity.
ehm ehm ehmmmm...

Any food wrapped in banana leaves is appetizing for me

My brother’s girlfriend assured us this version of local meatloaf tastes awesome. So we bought one of each(pork, chicken and beef). We paired it with steamed rice and it was surprisingly good.
My brother ordered us to gather our remaining money on hand so we can buy more.
I don’t remember what the old man said exactly but I remember he said he wasn’t sure if he will be coming back to our subdivision. He just got there by chance.
He was originally from Batangas, a province near Tagaytay City.We lived in Tanza Cavite by the time.
The old man said it was an authentic recipe of their people.I fell in love with it’unique ‘umami’.
But I was too shy to ask for the recipe.I don’t want to exhaust the man.
Since then everytime I knew somebody from Batangas I would ask them for the recipe. But their answer is quite similar to the other ones I asked.
“The old folks from Batangas knew the authentic recipe.”
Whewww...

This Saturday I went to the market on our once a week “market day” in our clubhouse and found it there. It was there all this time.
Every freaking Saturday!!!!
My daughter Zsandy told me
“ Ma, I’ve been seeing that woman every Saturday.I asked you to buy me those as I thought they were suman but you always ignore me..hmmp”
“Well I’m sorry I didn’t know.I thought it was tupig.”I replied.
“Anyway,I sometime buy the suman you wanted but those little wraps in bundle.”
I added.

And so we met again. It brought back the memory of that day when I first tasted it.
I looked at the mirror hoping it also brought back my decade younger face. But it hasn’t.
Hahahahahha
Anyways..anyone who knew the authentic recipe.Please..please..kindly share it to me.
I wanted to try making it atleast once in my lifetime.

P.S.
Those meatloaf we bought from the old man a total of eight wraps if I remember it right, didn’t made it until dinner. There was only three of us who ate them all.
That’s how good it is.

I hope your mouth is watering now—I mean I hope you enjoyed my blog today.
Have a blessed Sunday fellaz.God bless us always.
