Dixie Caverns
Dixie Caverns
Dixie Caverns are located directly off of I-81 in Salem, Virginia. There is a campground on the grounds and they offer a discount on the cavern tour if you are staying there. I-81 is an alternative north-south interstate in the eastern US for those who can and want to avoid the congested I-95. It’s a favorite route for snowbird RVers.
The caverns are not named after the nickname for the southern part of the country but for the inadvertent discoverer of the caves, a dog named Dixie. As the story goes, Dixie was chasing a small animal into a little opening in the side of the mountain where she fell 30 feet into a cave. Dixie’s owner saved her and after that began exploring the caves. When he sold the property he stipulated that the caves be named for Dixie.
The guided tour the caves is interesting and informative. Here are a few photos from the cave.

STOPThanks so much for sharing... I live in Virginia and have been to a couple of caves but not this one. Might have to pay them a visit.
Following and looking forward to more quality posts!
Thank you for your comment. The tour takes about an hour. The caves are small, I'm not sure how compare to the others in the state, but I thought it was worth it.
