The "Back to School" Head Cold Strikes Again!
Week two of my return to teaching ended on Friday and this week was more challenging than the first. The kids are still great but they were quite intent on testing their boundaries with me. Sometimes they won, sometimes I did. Lost some ground on the teaching front itself, in that I kept thinking with a senior high school teacher's brain, forgetting that my students are 10 and 11 years old and may not yet have the knowledge and skills that I ascribe to them. It meant stepping back and re-assessing the situation, re-teaching and, also re-training my own brain to plan properly. This part is challenging because I leave here in October and need to be prepared to teach whatever other level I am asked to.
At any rate, beyond that, the dreaded "back to school" head cold has struck me down, the first tingling showed up Friday night, the full force taking hold yesterday and today I'm trying to manage the symptoms so that I can prep for tomorrow. I haven't had this in September in five years, itself a symptom of being in a classroom with 25 other beings and all the germs that entails. I am exhausted and miserable but I will endure. I guess.
This next week will be interesting, we have an afternoon scheduled for all the grade six classes to mix and mingle and play games, as well as a curriculum implementation day on Friday, so, yay, I guess.
