Ottawa could be facing human rights tribunal hearing to settle First Nations child welfare compensation

When the human rights tribunal first ruled in January 2016 that Ottawa discriminated against First Nations children by underfunding on-reserve services, it reserved its decision on the issue of compensation to allow the parties to come to a settlement.

And yet, Ottawa balks. The Minister stated that she would prefer to have a negotiated settlement but in the years since the ruling the government has given no direction to the people responsible for negotiating that settlement. She even indicated that they would not consider negotiating while the possibility of another ruling hangs over their heads. Essentially, Drop the legal threat and we will come to the table. The settlement could be in the billions of dollars for First Nations children who were unfairly treated in the child welfare system on reserve

Another case of been there done that and with this government, and that is not specifically the current government, it is all the federal government’s in Canadian history at this point. This government just happens to be the one screwing around with First Nations right now. Let’s not forget that, settlements aside, they have not corrected the inequitable funding for First Nations in the child welfare system.
