My Top Ten Podcasts

in #life7 years ago

With apologies for the Revenge of the Fallen review, thought I would step back and share some things I like. I will try to do some of these top ten lists periodically, sometimes as “best of”, sometimes in no particular order. I thought it might be neat to share some of them with you all, as we work to build a relationship here, fellow Steemians. To start, I figured you might like to see what some of my favourite podcasts are and, possibly why. So I thought I’d share with you my ten favourites here. You might be surprised to know there are no Star Wars podcasts on this list but there are two Star Trek ones even though I do prefer Star Wars to Star Trek.

So, here they are, in no particular order:

  1. The Half Hour Happy Hour with Alison and Alex
    HHHH_2-241x160.jpg

Alison Haislip and Alex Albrecht sit down in Alex’s garage each week, with their “flight engineer, super-volcano,” Tom Kroestsky, and basically drink and tell stories, read emails and share odd & interesting news stories. They have an uncomfortable obsession with spiders and Elon Musk and are just really funny. I don’t drink so I don’t relate to their annual Drunksmas podcast marathon but it is hilarious listening to them get drunker and drunker on that but ultimately it is just three friends having fun and riffing and telling stories and disagreeing and being fun. They are super popular at podcasting and we are better off for it.

  1. Digigods
    digigods.jpg

Digigods is a bluray/dvd review podcast from the Wade Major and Mark Keiser, two film critics in Los Angeles. They talk movies, new video releases, riff on random stuff, Mark brings foods sometimes. They are just fun to listen to, they’re entertaining, and they interact with you on their Facebook group. They also have a related website, cinegods.com

  1. Mission Log
    mission log.jpg

Ken, John and the Computer are reviewing every episode of Star Trek in existence and seeing if they hold up and stand the test of time. And, by every episode, I mean every episode. They did the Original series, the animated series, the Original Series films and are currently in season 5 of The Next Generation. They plan to hit all those movies as well as Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. They have mentioned they are trying to decide how to cover the upcoming Discovery series. It is a lot of fun, believe it or not and they get into some serious discussions about themes.

  1. MediaIndigena
    mediaindigena.jpg

Rick Harp convenes a round table each week and discusses two or three big news stories or issues that are affecting Indigenous people in Canada. Each panel consists of two guests and rotates monthly. The discussions are thoughtful and attempt to deconstruct the stories to understand how the issue is being viewed in mainstream Canada and how that affects Indigenous peoples.

  1. Canadaland

Jesse Brown presents this podcast that examines and deconstructs the news media in Canada each week with a guest. On Sundays, they focus on an interview or single issue, on Thursdays, they present Short Cuts, which surveys the big things that go on that week. Bonus points to Canadaland Commons and The Impostr, two podcasts from Canadaland.

  1. Vital Vegas Podcast

Host Scott, creator of the Vital Vegas blog, talks and talks and talks. He presents Vegas news, listicles, Vegas history and other stuff all related to Las Vegas. He has interviews with locals and other folks. It’s really quite a lot of fun and information and makes me wish I could be in Las Vegas, a place I’m not right now.

  1. Women at Warp
    women at warp.jpg

Women at Warp is a Roddenberry Star Trek podcast where four feminists talk about Star Trek, its representations of women, contributions of women, and other Trek topics. It is funny and thoughtful and sometimes not all four are there but they all love Star Trek but want to point out the challenges it faces.

  1. CBC’s Quirks & Quarks

Science. Yay!

  1. Comedy Film Nerds

Graham Elwood and Chris Mancini and weekly guest talk new releases, sometimes have spoiler episodes, talk movie making, make jokes and be funny. Quite enjoyable.

  1. I Seem Fun: The Diary of Jen Kirkman

Jen Kirkman does the stream of consciousness thing and it is awesome.

All these podcasts are available on itunes and Stitcher and other sites. You can link to them from many of their own websites as well, I think, don’t quote me on that. Feel free to recommend some favourites of your own.
