New surveillance law in the Netherlands - Let's have a referendum!
With the 'sleepwet', 1984 is coming to the Netherlands too.
This new law, which has been passed on July 11th of this year, will give Dutch intelligence agencies more powers to spy on us.

The new law gives the following powers to the Dutch intelligence agencies:
- They are allowed to eavesdrop on citizens en masse, even on innocent citizens. For instance, a whole neighborhood can be spied on if a suspected criminal lives there.
- All automated devices may be hacked by intelligence agencies, e.g. your phone and computer.
- A secret DNA database may be created where everyone can be registered in.
- Gathered data may be shared with foreign intelligence agencies, even without analyzing it first.

Given that this new law will have a big impact on the freedom of the individual, this law should definitely not be passed, at least not without a referendum. Now, Dutch nationals can add their signature online instead of via snail mail. 300,000 signatures are needed before October 16th for the referendum to take place.

Met de sleepwet komt 1984 ook naar Nederland.
Deze nieuwe wet, die al op 11 juli is aangenomen, geeft veiligheidsdiensten meer bevoegdheden om ons te bespieden.
De wet geeft de volgende bevoegdheden aan Nederlandse veiligheidsdiensten:
*Er mag een zogenaamd “sleepnet” worden ingezet om massaal online communicatie af te luisteren, ook van niet verdachte burgers. Zo mag een hele wijk afgeluisterd worden als er een verdacht persoon in woont.
- Alle geautomatiseerde apparaten mogen gehacked worden. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan uw telefoon, computer of pacemaker.
- Er kan een geheime DNA-databank aangelegd worden waar iedereen in terecht kan komen.
- Verzamelde data mag met buitenlandse inlichtingendiensten gedeeld worden, ook zonder deze eerst te analyseren.

Omdat de sleepwet dusdanig grote gevolgen heeft voor de vrijheid van het individu, zou deze niet aangenomen mogen worden, of in ieder geval niet zonder een referendum. Nu is het mogelijk voor Nederlanders om online hun handtekening toe te voegen i.p.v. via de post. Er zijn 300.000 handtekeningen nodig om het referendum mogelijk te maken voor 16 oktober.

I know what's going to happen. It has something to do with a trashcan.
Just like the last referendum.. Unbelievable, but we have to try again, make people more aware of what the government is doing.
Yeah That's the only reason I can think of. But I'm very pessimistic that people will care about their privacy, some might even defend that law.

Na het Oekraïne referendum werd er al over gesproken inderdaad.
As far as I know, there are not many criminals in the Netherlands. Then, what's the point of passing such a law? Oh, yeah - to gain control over the people. I hope that you will collect the signatures.
