Creating a minimalist closet
Hello Steemit!
In 1 short week it is going to be Passover. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Passover is a Jewish holiday, celebrating the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in old times Egypt.
But that’s not the point of this post- as part of the holiday, we are required to make our homes extra “kosher” in advanced. That includes cleaning everything. EVERYTHING. Dust, windows, walls, the fridge, the garage… basically a VERY intense spring cleaning.
My parents take this holiday very seriously, and since I live with them this year, I am required to do the same. So I thought I’d use the opportunity to solve a tiny issue I have: my closet.
It’s bad guys. It’s messy, and full of 90% stuff I never wear.
So last week I decided to create a minimalist closet, with the goal of turning it to a capsule closet later on. If you don't know what a capsule closet is- it is basically a closet where you have a few staple items that you use to create different looks.
Since I'm not nearly fashionable enough to create a capsule closet that works just yet, for a long time I wanted to downsize the amount of clothes I have and only keep the ones I LOVE.
Plan of action
Since this is a pretty big challenge for me, I googled for tips, and the plan was to create 4 piles:
- Love it- keeping it
- Like it, but never wearing it
- Will never wear this again- donate
- Is unwearable- Trash
In the end, I went through the second pile, and decided which ones get a second chance with me, and which ones will make someone else happy. This process was very helpful for items that I had trouble deciding about- I found that after about 2 hours, when I came back to the "maybe" pile, it was much easier to decide which ones to keep.
Also, I ended up dividing my closet to 3 sections so as not to overwhelm myself: folded clothing, hanging and drawers.
Why did I even want to do that, and why should you too?
In a nutshell- having less STUFF allows us to be more organized, have a clearer environment and as a consequences, have a clearer mind.
I would open my closet and not be able to find anything to wear. Not because I don't have anything, but because I have too much cloths, and I can't see through them to the ones I actually like.
Since clearing up 2/3 of my cloths, I've been able to actually wear some things I completely forgot I even had, and keep everything more organized. And now, I can actually see what items I'm missing and need to buy.
I intend to make this a yearly thing, where I go through my cloths and let go of any of the things I planned to one day maybe wear, if I figure out how to style them or lose weight, or any other future me plans.
Getting rid of all of the excess cloths has made my closet lighter, and me feel lighter and clear, so I would definitely recommend.
Hope you have a great weekend,
Ruth
