The triptych of Nicolas Froment ("The Resurrection of Lazarus") was commissioned by the papal legate Francesco Coppini, who brought the artist to Italy.

Triptych came to the Uffizi from the Bosco ai Frati monastery in Mugello (Tuscany) as a result of confiscation of church property during the Napoleonic wars. During the restoration, it was possible to reveal the piercing sound of the artist's palette and significantly improve the opportunity to appreciate and admire the finest details of the picture, and also to confirm the authenticity of many elements of the gilded frame, especially the spectacular gothic carving in the central part of the triptych.

Who is Saint Lazarus, what is he famous for?

I think that many people know that Christ in his entire life accomplished the miracle of resurrection from the dead three times, and one of them is the resurrection of Lazarus from Bethany, which is two miles south of Jerusalem. Lazarus was animated four days after his death. This is considered a wonderful resurrection from the dead. After that, Lazar lived another 30 years. Christians have even a holiday called Lazorev's Sabbath.

After Christ was resurrected, all the apostles were told to go to different lands and preach Christianity. The apostle Barnabas, who was sent to "the Asian lands of Asia," personally appointed Lazarus a bishop in Cyprus. And now Saint Lazarus is very revered by the Cypriots, and on his holiday residents decorate the city with gladioli and daisies. In some sources it is said that Saint Lazarus was a priest in the city of Marseilles.

In 1098, on the basis of the hospital for the lepers, which was then under the patronage of the Greek Church by the Crusaders in Palestine, the Order of St. Lazarus was founded. The Order accepted into its ranks knights, who fell ill with leprosy.
The symbol of the order was a green cross on a white cloak. The Order was also called the Order of the Lazarites.

The Order of the Lazarites was the third order established by the Crusaders in Jerusalem, after the Templars (Templars) and the Hospitallers (Johannites). In the statute of these orders there was a clause according to which a person with leprosy passes from his previous orders to the Order of the Lazarites.
