Musings, Inspired Art and a Couple Rabbit Holes

Good Art Should Make You Think... Right?

That's what I am for both in my process as well as my result. Do I consider myself the best artist? Of course not. I do play a lot into my work though... and my recent sketch really turned out better than I thought it would.

I have yet to finish it all but as I invest more time into my work the lines and color/shading have continued to improve ... it'll still takes time, but I'm ok with that.

:)

What Was Medusa's Downfall?

Depending on how you look at things, the story of Medusa is either epically tragic or your run of the mill folk tale. Over the last weekend I have asked a few people what they remembered about the story of Medusa.

"Tell me what you know of Medusa..."

What do you think their answers were?

The responses that I got were interesting... to say the least.

They certainly influenced my sketch above.

She was so vain, she pissed off Athena causing her to place a curse upon her of snakes for hair, making her so terrifying to look upon that all who gazed upon her turned to stone.

She made a goddess mad by flaunting her beauty...

She was evil, and was punished for implying that she was better than the Gods in some way.

A good example of what happens when you act as though you're above or more important than other people.

I wonder if we're all reading the same story... But when I sit down and I think about it why wouldn't people have this perception of Medusa? Most people don't have the perception that classic literature story tellers were misogynistic assholes but by today's standards they were just that.

Ahem... while context may be helpful here are some heartwarming quotes.

There seems some solid bias up in here?

The fact that they were men of their time excuses it according to our social influence and changes the way we understand these stories causing them to transform into the way it is now.

Medusa Deserves a Moment

So, as I contemplated all of this, i considered just how Medusa would feel.

Slowly I work on the art as all of my thoughts settle. I think this is the spark of a series. I feel like I scratch at the surface, and then I kid you not... a spider lands on my page!

I am sure that means something? No, I know it is. Spiders represent creative endeavors, starting with somethjng that directly effects you. They charge your destint, can i dicate a need for independence, that you need to practice patience,
