Dare I Ask... How can we make Steemit more like Youtube?

Okay so bear with me and let me explain before someone bites my head off. I know some Steemit users are very rah rah Steemit down with other forms of social media. Personally I've never been like that. I don't see a reason why I must hate one social platform just because I use another, but I do sometimes see an antagonistic thing between Steemit and Youtube or Steemit and Facebook.

The same way that people use Instagram and Twitter and Facebook and Youtube to grow their brand or their influence or get their message out, I see no reason why someone can't use Steemit as well as other platforms.

The reason I bring up making Steemit more like Youtube I'm about to explain. I'm having a hard time putting this into words or even concrete steps on how we do this but one thing with Youtube, I notice I go down the Youtube rabbit hole. I"ll start watching a 3 minute video on one topic and next thing I know 7 hours have passed and I'm watching an hour and a half long documentary about an entirely different subject. Youtube is very good at knowing what I like and feeding me more of that content and because of that they keep me on the site for hours and time passes like nothing.

With Steemit for me personally finding content I enjoy is a challenge. That's not to say there's not good content on here, there is, but alot of it despite being high quality content just isn't my cup of tea.

Steemit admittedly has some room for growth in terms of categories. I definitely think if there's was a feature like if you liked this your 90% likely to like this as well and something that showed similar posts I think that would be good. Where as Youtube has the sidebar that shows related videos something on Steemit that showed related content to me would be very useful and helpful.

I guess my point is this. I can spend hours on Youtube going from one piece of content to the next. I rarely spend more than an hour at a time on Steemit and typically much much much less than that. Seeking out good content is a challenge, I have to click the magnifying glass search button and search for a term like entrepreneurship or documentary or weed or whatever else. It pulls up results, oftentimes not necessarily the best results, and as soon as I click something if I don't like it and hit the back button, I now have to search that term all over again. It's just kind of time consuming and inconvenient seeking out quality content.

So with that I ask you guys, what can we do to make Steemit more like Youtube?

The search could certainly be improved for sure. possibly by showing the main image, the title and how many upvotes and flags it got in a bar graph like we see on YouTube.

Then if we could select "most recent" vs "best performing....etc"

Then we could possibly have an extra tab for "Suggest Content" This would basically take in to consideration the people we follow and if they had a post do well and also take into consideration how that was tagged and look for other content that did well that was tagged in the same fashion or had similar topics.

It wouldn't be easy for sure but could certainly be done.

YouTube has spent a lot of time developing their algorithm to understand the minds of its users. It seems like YouTube knows more about our watching habits and preferences more than we do and that is kinda scary. I remember when YouTube was still developing the Recommended videos section and people always came across random videos and posted comments like "Why is this video in my recommended videos?" I think YouTube has since then fine tuned it so that it has become quite accurate.

The search function on steemit isn't very good. Likewise, for DTube, it only shows 10 results for any search term you enter. A lot of creators are getting frustrated with YouTube so I think Steemit has potential to blow up if these issues get resolved and people are here to make good content; not just earn curation rewards like @introvertspeaks has already mentioned.

I agree with you. I also don't spend much time browsing Steemit because I can't really find content I enjoy. I just seem to be bombarded by lots of posts and it is hard to decide which one to choose. YouTube makes it easier for me to see videos that I would like and click on.

There is room to grow. I would love it if Steemit could take off and we could see how people can get paid good money to post good content and not simply scavenge for pennies here and there.

Haha that's true that Youtube knows what I like more than I do. There's a lot of content it suggests which I would probably never seek out on my own but which I wind up becomming fascinated with. I watch a lot of wierd documentaries and stuff like that.

YouTube, similar to Amazon uses a kind of funnel that automatically suggests a viewing and product recommendations based on your previous search queries and site navigation. This form of algorithmic prediction is very effective particularly if you are surfing the web while you are logged in to your account.

This can be done on Steemit as well. But the question is, what shall the algorithm recommend you? People on here are actually do not make any search queries, instead they look for those posts with already hundreds, if not thousands of up-votes hoping to grab a slice of that pie reward.

This would only worsen the status quo if the reading recommendation will be based upon on that notorious curation mentality.

I'm on Steemit precisely because posts of Steemians I follow show up in my feed unfiltered. I want to be able to determine what I see, not someone else.

Is that really that much more unique than other social platforms though? Reddit I see my Reddit feed, sure there's some sponsored posts mixed in but it's content I want. Youtube I choose who I sub to and who I get notifications from, sure there's some wierd videos in the sidebars but I still pretty much control what I watch. I think Steemit does have plenty of great things going for it and I would a agree having only what you want to see on your feed being kind of cool. I would like to see the new, hot, trending tabs be a little better
