Doi Inthanon National Park: the highest mountain in ThailandsteemCreated with Sketch.

Thailand is often described as a country of two opposing regions: the north of the mountains, temples and extensive green fields; And the south, the paradisiacal beaches, legendary islands and endless parties. Although the second panorama has its appeal among tourists, it is in the first, far from the hype - that we have the chance to know small everyday aspects of the local culture.

With Chiang Mai as its main base, northern Thailand, surrounded by mountains stretching to neighboring countries, hides small villages that preserve the tribal way of life, exude religiousness and natural and architectural beauties. One of these refuges is the Doi Inthanon National Park, which houses, among other things, the highest mountain in the country.

The peak that baptizes the park is 2565 meters above sea level - a dwarf, compared to the neighboring Himalayan mountains, but still an impressive altitude for Thailand. It is around her that extend the domains of the National Park, which has hiking trails, miles of rainforest, waterfalls and a modern complex of temples.

It is a perfect weekend getaway destination or bounce back from Chiang Mai, especially when the high temperatures of the city become unbearable. The difference in altitude makes the climate in the park much more enjoyable, so take with you a cold sweater, even if traveling in the summer. In December, when thermometers drop enough, you can even witness the rare ice formation phenomenon at the top of the mountain.

How to get to Doi Inthanon National Park from Chiang Mai

The park entrance is only 85 km from Chiang Mai, near a village called Chom Tong. The best way to get there is by private car, but as foreigners can not drive in Thailand, you would have to pay a driver or risk the fine (at your own risk). There are those who make the bicycle route.

Almost all travel agencies in Chiang Mai offer some kind of excursion to the park - half day or full day, in groups large or small, and guide in English. Those who prefer to use public transportation can take a bus to the village of Chom Tong and try to get a songhtaew (a sort of pick-up that transports passengers) to the entrance of the temple, although this alternative is more complicated.

Attractions in Doi Inthanon National Park

The Doi Inthanon Temples

The modern complex of temples built there marks the highest point of Thailand. Mountains are sacred places for Buddhists and so it is common to find temples on top of them. Ali could not be different. The Doi Inthanon complex draws attention to its peculiar architecture that differs from the other temples on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, as well as the beautiful gardens that surround it. They were built to commemorate the 50-year reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. The two pagodas were placed facing each other, representing the royal couple. There is also a belvedere to enjoy the view of the park.

Giew Mae Pan Natural Trail

It is one of the park's most famous trails. It starts near where the temples are. To go there you must hire a local guide at the National Park Headquarters, for only 20 baths per person or 200 baths per group, but it is worth it because the guide is someone born and raised among the mountains of Thailand .

The trail has 2.5 km extension and takes around two hours to complete. It requires moderate resistance to physical activity, since it is necessary to go up and down hills. On the way you will get in touch with some of the most stunning scenery in the park.

Waterfalls

The park is filled with waterfalls and waterfalls, many of them only accessible by car. Among the most impressive are those of Wachirathan (km 21), Suriphum and Mae Klang. The last one is on the road outside the park and has an independent entrance.

Where to stay in Doi Inthanon National Park

It is possible to spend the night in the reserve, both in camping tents and in typical Thai style bungalows. This may be a good idea for people who like to bury themselves in nature and prefer quiet retreats instead of Chiang Mai's hype.

Tip: I took a half-day tour to Doi Inthanon National Park and combined the tour with an excursion to the village of Mae Klang, a small Karen tribal community.
