Erdogan plans to convert Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia into mosque

Yet again, the ancient pearl of Byzantine heritage, once an Orthodox Christian cathedral, is at the center of a political row as Turkey’s president proposes turning it into a mosque. The decision’s on hold for now, but the country’s main administrative body is expected to decide on the building’s status in 15 days – even though UNESCO has warned that changing the status of a World Heritage Site without its permission is illegal.
