Land of the dead
One of the most interesting places in Iasi, the city I live, is its biggest cemetery, Eternitate (Eternity, in English).
This old cemetery was open to public, so to speak, back in 1876 and its first inhabitant was a 17 months old baby boy. The beauty of this tomb makes you realize the pain felt by Gaston's parents.
Many of the city important people are burried here and their funeral monuments are the perfect display of the architectural trends. Their burial places are adorned with beautiful statues or busts, usually depicting the lost ones.
Other statues show the deceased's ocupation. For instance, this is the tomb of a once famous balerina.
Or a very high orthodox hierarch.
Many tombs are being guarded by angels.
Unfortunately, some graves are being abandoned due to descendants leaving the country or simply, no one left to care them.
As you can see in the pictures, all cemetery alleys are surrounded by trees: limes, poplars, ashes. Sometimes you cannot say for sure whether you take a walk in a park or just visit the dead.
All pictures were taken by me while bringing flowers to my father-in-law who rests here.
