Weeks 3 and 4 of Introduction to Welding
Weeks 3 and 4 entailed more stick welding. I'm combining them as it was a very similar ordeal both weeks. The big things with stick that I was learning was starting an arc, manipulating the puddle, and maintaining travel speed with proper distance to the workpiece. A simple process in concept yet harder to master.
I continued welding T joints and then proceeded to work on welding uphill vertically. Now welding uphill is a completely different battle as gravity is fully working against you when you do this. This is one of the reasons why my instructor is really big on welding uphill over down hill. If you can weld uphill then you can weld downhill but it doesn't work the opposite way.
Class continued and uphill began to suck less. After uphill we began around with some overhead welding. Even though your welding upside down the biggest factor with gravity is having Sparks and slag land on you. Outside of that I found it very similar to welding in a flat position. It worked very well for me to imagine it this way.
This concluded stick welding and my first of three classes for my welding certification.
