As we enter the Digital Age the human brain is set in new envoirements to interact with. For the first time in the known human history humans are bombarded with huge amouns of information to process. This film is showing us what researches are finding as they unravel how digital media and the internet are affecting people and the human brain.
"Smartphones, computers, tablets - the ubiquity of mobile devices these days is causing us stress. The permanent information overload from digital devices is being blamed for mental exhaustion, burnouts and depression. Backed up by a range of recent studies, our documentary looks at the risks of always being online.
About half the world’s population now has access to the Internet. Every day, we exchange huge amounts of data via our digital devices. E-Mails, blogs and Instagram and YouTube - they all demand our attention and have become a fixture of our private and professional lives. Recently an extensive analysis of students belonging to Generation Y showed that their average span of attention for computer screens had fallen to a mere 45 seconds. Research conducted back in 2004 put the average at three minutes. It is almost impossible to avoid this flood of information - mobile devices keep us in constant contact with our families, friends, colleagues and various networks around the world. But what psychological effects does this seemingly endless stream of data have? Are there limits to the brain’s cognitive abilities? Should we simply adapt to the new reality or fight for the right to be offline? In our report, neuroscientists, psychologists and entrepreneurs detail the effects of this information overload on the human brain."
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” - Arthur C. Clarke
Or any technology that reaches maturity becomes invisible.
For 100 years from inconvenient and dangerous the electricity has become convenient and invisible. Nobody thinks about the wires hidden in the ground and the walls just flip a swich if he/she wants light. If you now have 1 or 2 gadgets connected to the internet after 10 years, you will have 100. (fridge, TV, door lock, house thermostat or lighting ...) Do you remember the endless mail spam years ago? Now it's gone because mail servers recognize 99% and filter it for you. The same happens with the huge flow of senseless information that floods us. The personal assistants in your phone already have impressive capabilities, but that's just the beginning.
In few years your AI assistant will be able to learn your habits and preferences. It will warm the house to a pleasant temperature, create good excuses, and divert people who bother you and waste your time.
It will edit your Calendar and move the meeting with your doctor because the AI assistant of your doctor asked it because of an emergency. This is a transition period. We will be unloaded from the senseless noise and stress.
and just remember how the speed of acceleration is ever increasing, and what this could mean in the near future. Scary, yes?
As the same time all people aren't getting much smarter, infact the prospect of idiocracy is very real.
Great post, @rossenpavlov. Yes, the Russians have been doing TONS of this type of research for DECADES. I just posted this beauty which is right in line with your post : https://steemit.com/steemit/@transcript-junky/steemit-success-tip-of-the-day-14-meditating-our-way-into-the-higher-dimensions-of-the-steemiverse That is, it is focused on some SOLUTIONS to this growing EPIDEMIC of information overload. You are putting out LOTS of interesting posts, and so I have upped this one AND followed you. Keep it up... @transcript-junky
Thank you for your support, I appreciate it!
Well,
I'm not so worried
