Kiddos New year festival

After the fair for the New Year festival, the kids at our school were eager to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year. Thanks to their hard work, the children's celebration was held at school in a very festive way.

Many traditions were carried out to teach the young ones about the Sinhala New Year. First, religious ceremonies were held at school during auspicious times. Then came the tradition of pouring milk for good luck, which was successfully done with the teachers' help. The school was filled with the smell of the new year, symbolizing prosperity and happiness.

Next, there was the tradition of playing games and enjoying sweets. The parents had prepared all the treats for the celebration, and each class had a table full of delicious sweets.

I was invited to join one of the classes for some rituals. I fed milk rice to all the children, lit the lamp. It was a unique experience for me.

Afterwards, the children enjoyed visiting their relatives. Following all these traditions, the New Year games began. The festival featured various competitions like singing folk songs, running with a false leg, sack races, musical chairs, and a best laugh contest.

The parents deserve praise for their contributions to the success of the festival. They stayed on the school premises until all the activities were over. Undoubtedly, some children had experiences they wouldn't have had at home.
