PSALM 63:1 | SPIRITUAL DRYNESS

Psalm Psalm 63:1 “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water."

Are you feeling disconnected from God? Do you at times feel like that passion and desire you once had for God and spiritual things seems gone?

Spiritual dryness is sometimes called dry seasons of our spiritual walk with God. The question is this: Are all committed Christians experiencing this moments in their Christian life? The answer is Yes. There are low moments in our spiritual walk.

The only saddest experience during those moments is the feeling of inability to do what you use to do in your spiritual life—because in the time of your high moments of victory, you always wanted to do all the things that will bring honor to God.

When people say they are “spiritually dry,” they usually mean they feel distant from God or are struggling to grow spiritually. They don’t see God working, the burdens of life press in, and they begin to feel discouraged. It is like what the psalmist said in Psalm 63:1 "...in a dry and weary land where there is no water" Spiritual dryness is like that your life is in the far dessert where your thirst cannot be satisfied because there is no water in that dry and weary land.

What causes Spiritual dryness?

Sometimes spiritual dryness is due to personal sin

Sin can cause us to feel distant from God because we are attempting to live for ourselves instead of living for God. Unconfessed sin can cause us to lose the joy associated with our salvation.

Some people feel spiritually dry because of physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion

When we are sick, it is often more difficult to focus on God or spiritual things. An example of this over-fatigue is Elijah. After Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal, he ran a great distance because he feared Queen Jezebel would put him to death (1 Kings 19:1–5). He was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted, and he wanted to die.

God sometimes allows a person to reach a low point before intervening in a powerful way. The time before that intervention can feel spiritually dry.

Jesus said:

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38)

The only possible way to overcome our spiritual dryness is come to the river of living water no other than Jesus Christ. In weary and dry land of our life, He is able to refresh our spirit.
