Nikola Tesla the scientist who illuminated the world

source

Nikola Tesla is one of the most influential figures in the history of science and technology. The American physicist worked since 1884 as an assistant to Thomas Edison. Later he created his own laboratory in New York. There he discovered the principle of the rotating magnetic field and polyphase alternating current systems, which led him to win the battle of energy distribution, since the transport of alternating current is cheaper and simpler than the continuous. His several other systems that he invented, such as remote control, largely made possible the heyday of the Industrial Revolution.

Thanks to him, electricity reaches our homes and any other building by pressing a switch. He invented the electric induction motor, the coils for the AC electric generator, the spark plugs, the alternator, the radio, the remote control, the fluorescents and the neon light, among the more than 700 inventions and 100 patents they attribute and technified the world. Also, it is considered the precursor of all wireless networks. He was a controversial and committed visionary, an enigmatic figure, an inventor who was ahead of his time and ours. He is considered the best inventor of the 20th century.

In a small village consisting of several villages between the mountains of the Lika region, in Croatia called Smiljan; there was where Nikola Tesla was born, the man who would change the world forever.

Passionate about mathematics since he was a child, he had a marvelous memory and an extraordinary ability to mentally perform calculations and "visualize" his inventions.

When he was 17 years old, Tesla was infected by cholera. He was close to not recovering, but finally he was cured. Shortly before, his father promised that, if he did, he would send him to a great engineering school, just as he wanted.
He studied Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Physics. He worked in several electrical companies in Europe until the last company moved him to New York; where he was hired by Thomas A. Edison to work at Edison Machine Works.

In 1885 he argued that he could design the engines and generators of Edison improving their quality and performance. In 1888, his first design of the practical system to generate and transmit alternating current for the electric power system took place.

"Everything I invent works as I have imagined it, the experimentation takes place as planned."

In 1891, Tesla conducted demonstrations with several machines before the American Institute of Engineers at Columbia University. It showed in this way that all kinds of devices could be fed through a single cable without a return conductor.

After his demonstration of wireless communication by means of radio waves in 1894, and after his victory in the war of the currents, he was widely recognized as one of the greatest electrical engineers in the United States of America.

In 1899, Tesla retreats to the Colorado Springs mountains to experiment with electromagnetic waves. It builds a high-voltage, high-altitude laboratory that surrounds the largest Tesla coil in the world.

In addition to his work in electromagnetism and electromechanical engineering, Tesla's work later served in varying degrees to the development of robotics, remote control, radar, computer science, ballistics, nuclear physics, 9 and theoretical physics.

The radar is the basic instrument of defense in all the modern countries of the world.

Tesla discovers the radar principle in 1900, sets it up and, despite his financial problems, publishes the principles of what will become, almost three decades later, on the radar.

It works like the ultrasound of bats: it sends a concentrated beam of a current of tiny electric charges vibrating at a very large frequency, so that it bounces on the target, then the beam is received again and, after analyzing it, an image is obtained Of the objective.

Decorations of Tesla

He received numerous academic distinctions from American and other universities during his lifetime:

  • The medal John Scott

  • The Edison medal, considered the greatest recognition in the electric field

  • Numerous awards granted by European governments

But it will not be until 1975 that his name will become part of the pantheon of American inventors.

Nikola Tesla worked throughout his life for science, for the advancement of knowledge and techniques. His whole life was devoted to the study of electricity and magnetism, as well as its possible applications that are largely used in our modern society.

In his death, messages came from all over the world, deploring the loss of a great genius. Three laureates with the Nobel Prize, Millikan, Compton, and James Frank, gave him one last tribute:

It is difficult to find another man whose visions and inventions have had as many direct repercussions as those of Nikola Tesla on the lifestyle of all the populations of the industrialized countries.

As well said B.A. Behrend, president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers:
"If we should take and eliminate from our industrial world the results of Mr. Tesla's work, the wheels of industry would stop, the trains would be immobilized, our cities would be left in the shadows and our factories would die [...] His name marks a time in the advancement of electrical science. A revolution arises from this work ... »
