If one separates qualities from skill, the single most important quality a translator can have is humility.

Some translators feel like they need to put their own stamp on the translation, and that is not a great idea. Translators serve the text. Our job is to make the experience of reading it in the target language as close to possible to the experience people have when reading it in the original language. And that means we need to put our egos aside.

A translator should be kind, transmit good vibes and not be self-centered, therefore it requires humility. And without a doubt, to have ample and very good knowledge, because, the other person trusts her.

I think the most important quality for a translator is an open mind. The brain is the tool used in this area, you can encounter with any type of content and sometimes the languages works in misterious ways.

I love @didic’s response. Which means, of course, that I’ll have to give a different answer. Snap!

I actually agree with everything else that’s been said, but since the question asks for a single quality, I’ll go ahead and say: exceptional skills in the target language.
As you said in another post, this doesn’t mean that a good translator should only translate in their mother tongue. They might be just as skilled in the language they studied in for most of their life or in a foreign tongue which they really went above and beyond to perfect. But that’s about it. On the other hand, being born into a language and/or speaking it in school for a long time doesn’t really ensure that one’s knowledge of it would be sufficient for high quality translations, hence the “exceptional” requirement.

There are lots of qualities that a translator must have like deep knowledge of both languages, a good knowledge of grammar, fair general knowledge about the topic so that you can understand references.

Providing the clients with high-quality professional translation services is not an easy job. A qualified translator to provide their clients with professional translation services must meet the following three requirements: an expertise in source and target languages, some basic knowledge of the specific branch of science your translation concentrates upon, and a lot of discipline in carrying out your translation practice.

I feel one of the quality Translators need to carry is the ability to express emotions that are there in the conversation by other person. Many of the translators are accurate in translating the words, but might not be that good in rendering out the emotions that are linked with what the other person is trying to put forward.

If a translator is audible, all is done.
That is the most important quality a translator can have.
Cause withou even finishing the sentence, the audience will know the details

A translator must have patience and kindness both are generated by having love for your trade.

And of course, security and confidence in having the necessary knowledge.
