# 860 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 15

Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

The info below comes mostly from: https://moderncommemoratives.com/

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.

Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."

They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.

The fifteenth is the MS70 2001-P "Capitol Visitor".

"The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Half Dollar represented the first commemorative half dollar issued in five years. The last commemorative coins of this denomination had been issued as part of the large program from 1995-1996 for the Olympics. The present coin was issued along with a $5 gold and $1 silver for the proposed Capitol Visitor Center."

PCGS graded 1,615 2001-P "Capitol Visitor", with 144 as MS70. 99,157 2001-P "Capitol Visitor" were minted in Philadelphia.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $110.00 and today's price is around $75.00. The issue price was $9.75.

The obverse consist of the North Wing of the original Capitol superimposed on an outline of the present building. A horse drawn carriage appears in front and a circle of stars surround.

The obverse was designed by Dean McMullen.

The reverse features an arrangement of inscriptions in different fonts and a circle of 16 stars, representing the 16 states that existed in 1800.

The designers of the reverse was Alex Shagin and Marcel Jovine.

Very nice. I like the simplistic old time look of this half dollar.
