La barre des 2 000 mètres exigera des coureurs de se projeter dans une nouvelle dimension. Ils la franchiront peu avant d’atteindre le col du Tourmalet, à un stade où la bataille des meilleurs grimpeurs devrait être entamée. Sur un format très dense, l’étape imposera auparavant d’enjamber le col du Soulor.

The 2 000m mark will force the riders to enter into a new dimension. They will reach it just before making it to the Col du Tourmalet, by the time the battle between the best climbers should be at its most entertaining. On a rather intense format, the stage will, before that, feature two other climbs: the Col du Soulor.

TARBES

C’est le plus souvent pour des départs que le peloton du Tour s’est réuni à Tarbes tandis que la dernière arrivée a vu la victoire de Pierrick Fédrigo en 2009. Lors de la précédente, en 1951, la journée avait été marquée par un accident spectaculaire : Wim van Est, premier porteur néerlandais du Maillot Jaune, avait plongé dans un ravin, après avoir franchi le col d’Aubisque. La chute lui fit perdre la tête du classement général, mais lui laissa la vie sauve. « Quel Dieu veillait sur Wim van Est ? », se demanda L’Équipe du lendemain.

Tarbes has mainly hosted the peloton of the Tour for stage starts. The last finish there saw the victory of Pierrick Fédrigo in 2009. On the previous occasion, in 1951, the day had been marked by a spectacular crash: Wim van Est, first Dutch rider to wear the Yellow Jersey had indeed fallen in a ravine just after reaching the top of the col d’Aubisque. That crash obviously made him loose his overall leadership but more importantly, he survived. “What God watched over Wim van Est?” was the question asked by L’Équipe the following day

TOURMALET BARÈGES

Octave Lapize a été le premier au Tourmalet, alors que l’épreuve s’aventurait pour la première fois en haute montagne en 1910. Depuis, le Géant des Pyrénées se dresse quasi systématiquement devant les coureurs, mais seules deux arrivées y ont été jugées. En 1974, c’est Jean-Pierre Danguillaume qui devança par surprise les meilleurs grimpeurs. Puis, en 2010, les deux grands montagnards du moment, Alberto Contador et Andy Schleck, avaient achevé l’ascension en duo... Avantage au Luxembourgeois sur la ligne d’arrivée.

Octave Lapize was the first to reach the top of the Tourmalet while the event visited high mountains for the very first time in 1910. Since then the Giant of the Pyrenees is almost systematically on the path of the riders but only twice has it hosted stage finishes. In 1974, Jean-Pierre Danguillaume surprised the best climbers to capture victory. Then, in 2010, the two best “mountaineers” of the moment, Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck, had finished the climb together... the advantage going the Luxemburger’s way on the finish line.
