USA roadtrip #22: Breathtaking Bryce Canyon [EN|GER]

We have already visited many national parks in the USA (Zion, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde etc.) and it’s really amazing that each park is scenically unique and can score with its own characteristics.

This makes it particularly difficult to compare the parks and to create a ranking. Nonetheless, Bryce Canyon is one of the most beautiful parks in the entire United States, which visit made a long lasting impression on us.

Already the approach on the Utah State Route 12 (you have to drive the whole route) is an experience with fabulous views. The area around the Bryce Canyon is with a height of 2400 to 2700 meters very high and is therefore a popular ski resort in winter.

The Bryce Canyon is considered the largest collection of hoodoos in the world and can therefore be appropriately described as a forest of stones. The canyon and the countless stone pillars were not shaped by a river but by erosion of wind, water and ice.

Also in this park, from the entrance shuttle buses have to be used to get to the sightseeing points. First stop should be the Amphitheater, which is the largest and most spectacular hoodoo concentration. Due to the lighting conditions and shadows of the hoodoos we recommend this point for the later afternoon.

The park offers numerous hiking tours, all of them have their own highlights. Depending on your preferences, you can choose to walk down into the canyon or along the rim.

The further you go from the bus stops, the fewer people you meet, and the quieter and more convincingly you can enjoy the beauty of this natural spectacle.

Just outside the park is the Mossy Cave Trail, which is due to the location ignored by most of the tourists. With a river beneath and a small waterfall, we can only advise this short detour.

Wir haben bereits sehr viele National Parks in den USA besucht (Zion, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde etc.) und finden daran besonders erstaunlich, dass dabei jeder Park landschaftlich einzigartig ist und mit eigenen Besonderheiten punkten kann.

Das macht es besonders schwer die Parks miteinander zu vergleichen und ein Ranking zu erstellen. Nichtsdestotrotz ist der Bryce Canyon aber einer der schönsten Parks der gesamten USA, dessen Besuch und nachdrücklich geprägt hat.

Bereits die Anfahrt auf der Utah State Route 12 (unbedingt die ganze Route fahren) ist ein Erlebnis mit fabelhaften Ausblicken. Das Gebiet um den Bryce Canyon ist mit einer Höhe von 2400 bis 2700 Metern sehr hoch gelegen und ist daher im Winter ein beliebter Skiort.

Der Bryce Canyon gilt als größte Ansammlung von Hoodoos auf der Welt und kann daher passend als Wald aus Steinen beschrieben werden. Der Canyon und die unzähligen Steinsäulen wurden nicht durch einen Fluss sondern durch Erosionen von Wind, Wasser und Eis geformt.

Auch in diesem Park müssen ab dem Eingang die Shuttle-Busse genutzt werden, um zu den Besichtigungspunkten zu gelangen. Erste Anlaufstelle sollte dabei das Amphitheater sein, welches die größte und spektakulärste Hoodoo-Ansammlung bildet. Aufgrund der Lichtverhältnisse und Schattenwürfe empfehlen wir diesen Punkt für den späteren Nachmittag.

Der Park bietet zahlreiche Wandertouren, die alle ihre Besonderheiten haben. Je nach Vorlieben kann man hierbei nach Wanderungen in den Canyon hinunter oder oben am Abgrund entlang wählen.

Je weiter man sich von den Bushaltestellen entfernt, desto weniger Menschen trifft man und desto ruhiger und eindrücklicher kann man die Schönheit dieses Naturschauspiels genießen.

Etwas außerhalb des Parks befindet sich der Mossy Cave Trail, welcher aufgrund der Lage von vielen Touristen nicht beachtet wird. Mit der Lage an einem Fluss inklusive Wasserfall können wir zu diesem kurzen Abstecher aber nur raten.

Auch unser nächster Canyon liegt abseits jeglicher Touristenmassen und ist ein wahres Abenteuer: Peekaboo und Spooky Gulch Slot Canyons
