Baiturrahman Great Mosque Banda Aceh, is a mosque that has its own history sheet, now a State Mosque located in the heart of Nanggro Aceh Darussalam Province. The name of the Grand Mosque of Baiturrahman is derived from the name of the Grand Mosque built by Sultan Iskandar Muda in 1022 H / 1612 AD This mosque was first built by the Sultan Iskandar Muda government, but has been burned to the second Dutch army in the month of shafar 1290 / April 1873 AD, where the incident killed Maj. Gen. Khohler who then immortalized his shot at a small monument under a ketapang / geulumpang tree near the north entrance of the mosque.
Four years after the Baiturrahman Great Mosque was burned, in mid-shafar 1294 H / March 1877 AD, by repeating the general promise of Van Sweiten, then Governor-General Van Lansberge declared to rebuild the burnt Baiturrahman Mosque. This statement was announced after a consultation with the heads of State around Banda Aceh. Where it is concluded that the influence of the mosque is very big impression for the people of Aceh who are 100% Muslim. The promise was made by Major General Vander as the Aceh Military Governor at that time. And right on Thursday 13 Syawal 1296 H / 9 October 1879 M, placed the first stone which is represented by Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil. Baiturrahman Great Mosque is ready to be rebuilt in 1299 Hijriyah along with the dome is just a course.
In 1935 AD, the Baiturrahman Great Mosque expanded its right and left by two additional domes. And in 1975 M the occurrence of extension again. This expansion has two more domes and two north and south towers. With this second expansion Baiturrahman Great Mosque has five domes and finished hiring in 1967 M. In order to welcome the XII National Level Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (MTQ) on 7 to 14 June 1981 in Banda Aceh, the Grand Mosque was embellished with the courtyard, clinkers mounting on the streets of the Grand Mosque grounds. Repair and addition of wudhuk place from porcelain and installation of door crackers, chandelier lamps, calligraphy verses of Qur'an from brass materials, dome parts and fountain installation in front yard ponds.
And in 1991 AD, in the era of Governor Ibrahim Hasan there was an extension back covering the front and back yard and the mosque itself. The expanded part of the mosque includes the addition of two domes, the floor of the mosque where prayer, the library room, the living room, the office space, the hall and the wudhuk room, and 6 local schools. While. including page extension, park and parking lot and one main tower and two minarets.
Viewed from history, this Baiturrahman Grand Mosque has a high value for the people of Aceh, because since Sultan Iskandar Muda until now still stands majestically in the middle of the heart of Banda Aceh. This Grand Mosque has various functions besides praying, which is place to hold pengajian, event of religious ceremony like maulid Prophet Muhammad SAW, warning 1 Muharram, Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (newly completed MTQ Telkom-Telkomsel Nasional), shelter for citizens of the city as well the immigrants, one of the attractions of Islami.
At the time of the earthquake and tsunami (December 26, 2004) which destroyed parts of Aceh, the mosque survived without significant damage and many survivors here. Area / environment of this mosque is also used as Islamic Shari'ah area, so we should keep and not polluted by acts that harass the mosque and violate the Islamic Shari'a.
