Torreón de Cojímar is a XVII century military fortification built in 1649 in Havana, Cuba to safeguard Cojímar's coastal surroundings. The fortification was built with the financing of the neighbors' funds and it cost 20,000 ducads (more than 3,000,000 USD today).

In the second half of XVIII century the fortress was taken by English troops during the first day of the invasion and destroyed later; it was rebuilt in 1763 after British rule ended. It is the oldest settlement in the territory of East Havana.

I decided to show a different perspective of the fortress so I went to the other side of Cojímar's bay in another trip. To go there you have to cross a bridge over the emblematic berth located in Cojímar's river where Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea hero set sail.


The monument to Hemingway's memory is located in front of the fortress.

Taking a closer look at the photo I realized the memorial has been vandalized. Notice the faint "O" at the end of the name "ERNEST". It seems that someone decided that it was better to put his name "ERNESTO" in Spanish.
