Street amerika
By the time President Eloy Alfaro led Ecuador in 1895, it was announced that there would be new railroad construction. Later this path will connect the coastal city of Guayaquil with the capital of Quito.
But it turns out this plan gets stiff opposition, especially from conservative and liberal people. Many of them think that the Andes can not be conquered by trains.
Despite the resistance, Alfaro did not give up and then hired contractors from America to carry out the mission of building the world's toughest train line. The construction of this historic lane then began in 1899.
Building a railroad on the plains like that is not an easy thing to do. Rapid river flows, attack of poisonous snakes, malaria epidemic, dysentery and yellow fever become obstacles in completing the development.
The most challenging part of building a railroad track route is a steep section called the nickname 'Satan's nose' or Nariz del Diablo, which runs between Alausi and Sibambe. The engineers who will climb this 800-meter-high cliff have to go through a series of steep terrain.
The steep section that is perpendicular like a nose is then cut by blowing its wall. Various strategies are carried out so that the train passes through one narrow slit and passes through the next gap, to behasil through the nose area of the devil.
Many believe that the devil's nose is damned to touch, so no railroads can be built there. And it is said that all acts contrary to that belief will be paid by human life.
Believe it or not, but there is a terrible event after that. In the final stages of completion of the Nariz del Diablo track, more than 2,000 workers die from bad climate-related diseases. Workers who were victimized were mostly brought from British colonies in the Caribbean, and mostly from Jamaica. Hundreds
