How Do My Movie Will Look Like?

how do my movie will look like.jpg

Some of these movies were not my personal favorites, but I adore them for having great cinematography overall. I had watched a ton of movies including those in the Citizen Kane days. (What the hell is Rosebud?)

But when it comes to picking what great films are, I maintain a high standard of choosing what movies will be included. And none of them are Transformers or even Twilight movies (nah, not a chance).

Why I got this idea?

I got some weird dreams lately. My dreams had full of stories — some were weird, but most were with good twists, depth, and great sceneries. I wrote in a notebook everytime I woke up for future reference. . .You know, in case that I decided to write a novel then turn it into a movie (or movies, plural form).

As I pondered, if I had given the chance, how do my movie will look like?

As I find out the answer, I made this list of movies that will be my source of inspiration for their screenplay, cinematography, acting, and story:

Warning! Spoiler Alert!

On The Job (2013)

Let us start on a movie of our own.

On_the_Job_Philippine_theatrical_poster.jpg

On The Job (or abbreviated as OTJ) is an award winning Filipino neo-noir crime thriller firm.

Plot. (again, spoiler alert) The movie involves two contract prisoners that are temporarily released from jail to carry out political executions. Those missions are carried out by corrupt government men for their self-interests. On the other side, two law enforcers are tasked to investigate drug-related cases. Suddenly, they find themselves involved on a greater scheme of things involving big politicians executing perfect and hidden agendas.

What I like in this movie: The story. The story is so relevant today in our country. I know a reliable source that testaments that there are true contract prisoners in this country carrying out those kind of killing missions. For the drugs cartels and operations as depicted in this film, we already know that as we now live in President Duterte's Philippines. There are bigger names related to drugs more than you ever imagined.

I also like the tension that this movie builds. It is non-stop. And how I like rooting for the contract prisoners played by Gerald Anderson and old-guy badass Joel Torre, and not Papa P. Actually, I like the scene when Rayver Cruz, one of Piolo's sidekick got shot by Gerald Anderson. One of the greatest scene in the history of Philippine movies. Haha.

3 Idiots (2009)

220px-3_idiots_poster.jpg

3 Idiots is an Indian coming-of-age comedy-drama movie. You know, that kind of feel good movies.

The plot: The film is about the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college, and is a satire about the social pressures under an Asian education system. The film is narrated through parallel dramas, one in the present, the other ten years in the past. (Thank you Wikipedia and the man who invented copy-pasting. You sure do created one of the outstanding technological advances in the history.)

What I like in this movie: The story. The love story. The humor. A movie that makes you laugh, at the same time makes you cry. It has life lessons in it. And all we can relate. Some may find that they had no antagonists in their lives, but look at your "terror" professsor back in the days.

What I also like is that the movie questions the norms such as the education system — why bother to have a top 1 and top 2 in a class? It only creates competition. Education is not like a race, because if it is, it stresses you out.

I also like the use of flashbacks. Actually, the movie is 70% narrated in the flashback. And the adventure that Rancho's (the protagonist's) friends and his archrival went through in search of Rancho at the present narrative. All is well, all is well.

American Beauty (1999)

American_Beauty_poster.jpg

American Beauty is an American drama film that won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The plot: A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend.

What I like in this movie: It addresses family issues and personal identities. All of the main characters had developed carefully in the film's story (character development). They are unique on their own ways.

But only one character had gain massive improvements in his life. That character is, of course, the protagonist named Lester (played by Kevin f*cking Spacey).

At the start of the movie, he was a big time loser who was stucked in a rut on everything what was going on — his job, the way he can't take a look at his wife, his daughter, his neighbors. . .

Everyone in the film was trying hard to find their own respective happiness, and Lester ultimately achieved it by just being true to himself in order for him to get free. To make it short, I found this movie inspiring.

And nonetheless, great acting by the cast.

Office Space (1999)

Office_space_poster.jpg

Another 1999 movie. This one is a cult-classic comedy film.

The plot: Three company workers who hate their jobs decide to rebel against their greedy boss.

What I like in this movie: This is a true-to-life assessment of our mundane lives. We go to our work with so much dissatisfaction, we got so many work to do but as the office-boy-protagonist said, "where's the dime?"

This is a comedy movie, but what I like is that it helps us to assess our current situation and what we can do (just like American Beauty) — the link between our work and happiness.

Take for example: The protagonist remembered his professor when they were assessed on what career they will go through life successfully. The prof asked them a simple question: what they will do if they have a million dollars? The point is, whatever they answer, it must be their preferred career in which they will find passion and enjoyment. For example, if you answer restoring old cars or teaching kids or stock trading — you get the idea.

And then, a happy and a satisfied friend construction worker asked the protagonist the same question. As far as I remember, it goes like this:

Friend: "What would you do if you have a million dollars?'"
Protagonist: "Nothing!"
Friend: "Nothing, huh?"
Protagonist: "I will just sit on my ass all day. . . doing nothing."
Friend: (after a pause) "Well, you don't need a million dollars to do nothing."

This movie is another feel good movie, and with deeper philosophies. Sure, there are some 1999 movies that are absolutely great with deeper themes which I also like, take for example: The Matrix, Fight Club, Magnolia, American History X.

Whiplash (2014)

Whiplash_poster.jpg

Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle [La La Land]. As you noticed the movie poster above, the movie is critically acclaimed.

The plot. A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an abusive instructor who will stop the student's potential.

What I like in this movie. This is one hell of a movie, I guarantee you. This film is supposed to be musical, and I think it is completely contrast to musical films like Pitch Perfect, where every character on the way is so cool. Whiplash is different.

I had endorsed this film to my friends, and hell, they told me that they watched this masterpiece repeatedly like 5 times. Me? I think 50 times.

I had never seen an entire movie where I felt on the edge of the seat more than any action or horror movies that I had watched. And the fucking ending! The ending ends in a high note. Again, I had never seen a movie ends in its peak (or the climax) which is another factor that makes the movie great.

The movie has superb story, cinematography, soundtrack, phasing, and acting by Miles Teller, and most importantly J.K. Simmons' acting who won an Academy Award for his role of an abusive instructor.

The movie depicts an important hardened lesson in resilience and when to stop measuring up to your mentor. Whiplash is a captivating study of ambition. It is inspiring.

I remember this movie when times get rough. I remember this movie when I doubt myself and be reminded to never stop believing in yourself.

You have to watch it.

WALL-E (2008)

WALL-Eposter.jpg

Wall-E is a 2008 American computer-animated science fiction film produced by Pixar Animation Studios

The film is No. 1 in Time Magazine's list of the "Best Movies of the Decade". And in 2016 was voted among 100 films considered the best of the 21st century by 117 film critics from around the world.

(Note: No shit? I only recently had known this when I researched and copy-paste this thing. Glad that I put Wall-E in this list. Why? You will find out later.)

The plot. In the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.

What I like in this movie. Yeah, mankind. A little robot in an animation film would decide the fate of mankind? What the? (You see the point?)

Basically, what makes a movie great is that —you know: in exchange for watching a movie for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, a moving picture addresses us to certain philosophies and tackle issues that makes us think for the rest of our lives. And this movie does it.

What the film criticizes are consumerism, corporatism, nostalgia, waste management, human environmental impact and concerns, obesity, and global catastrophic risk.

I think these issues were not far to happen from what we are today.

The film is so good that for the first 30 minutes, there's not even a dialogue, but we're captivated. We just see how simply Wall-E lives, day-by-day.

But at that moment, we might think "what happened to Earth?"

And for the next minutes the movie went by, Wall-E was sent on a spaceship where humans had escaped. Humans escaped Earth because of pollution that were caused by consumerism. . . They gone fat because they depends mainly on technological advances that make humans so lazy (remember Natural Selection theory by Charles Darwin?)

Those fat humans were so blind that they didn't know what issues they currently have as a whole, because what they only know is enjoy. They were provided with everything that they need but they are numb that they didn't even know what dancing is, or having to look on your loved one's eyes, smile, and hold their hand. And those things are the best things in life that future humans forget because technology "eats" them.

As I said, these issues were not far to happen from what we are today.

There are some people that I know who said that the movie is just a kid's films. And they rather chose to be blinded by the stunning visual effects of Superman to their delight. I said to myself, "ok, no problem, no need to argue to them." Because these people I know are the one who look likes this:

You are spot on about WHIPLASH. great movie. Though I do have mixed feelings about the ending. Is it better to be an abused genius or settle for a life of happy mediocrity? I tend to agree with GOOD JOB being harmful, that we must push ourselves to achieve something great. Is that the wrong message to take away? Is JK Simmons supposed to be evil? The dude has a point...

Hi. Thanks for reading. The ending was spot-on when Fletcher (JK Simmons) finally nod, smile and inferred that he acknowledged Andrew's talent (Miles Teller) when the latter unleashed his inner beast on the big stage. I think Andrew had realized that he must do one more drastic action by himself after being embarassed by Fletcher (for choosing to play a piece that Andrew doesn't know). And for the part of Fletcher, he realized that Andrew will never stop to become great whatever the circumstances he put on his student.

For me, the abusive behavior of Fletcher was an ingredient for his students to become great, because great people pursue their dreams no matter what the odds are, no matter what kind of abuse are. Their happiness rely on their quest to the realization of their dreams and greatness, no matter what kind of abuse they have to go on their way. This is not new to life when everybody criticizes you - even already powerful people are subjected to the abuse through criticism by the media. But they never stop.

That's why I agree with the part of "good job." Many people stop when they had did something good, and they forget to continue progressing and improve over time because they don't want to "beat" that already good job they had. They only had set the standard for their previous good job and forget to raise the bar. Imagine if Steve Jobs was content of creating the iPhone 1. . .or Facebook was so good back then even it was intended only for Boston universities. Imagine if they just held on to their own good job, maybe we dont have latter iPhones or no Facebook all over the world.

(sorry for the long reply :) )
