The Anonymous blogger on tour...Europe - Day 10 - Madeira Island, Portugal
So today we arrive at the stunning Madeira Island, Portugal. Well the Island belongs to Portugal but it's about a 40 minute flight to Portugal from the Island which sits on it's own in the ocean. About a 20 minute flight from the island is Porto Santo an Island full of beaches and cocktail bars.
Today I met my Uncle when we got off the ship who lives on Madeira Island. My girlfriend had never met my Uncle before so it was a great stop. After disembarking we took a drive up to the north side of the island where the weather was quite cold and windy. We stopped of at a radar station from some fantastic views from above the clouds.
After a quick stop for photos we headed back into Funchal. Madeira is by far the most beautiful place we have visited so far. We stopped in at a little cafe by the sea in Funchal's old town and met my two cousins and my Uncle's wife for a drink and a chat. Unfortunately we only had about four hours with them as they had friends with them this week but it was great to see them again, the last time I saw my cousins they were small. The older of the two is now nearly eighteen years old!.
After saying our goodbyes me and my partner took a stroll through Funchal. I have been to Funchal before so I still kind of knew my way around, it's like paradise, anyone who has not heard of madeira should consider visiting here. I'll let the pictures show how beautiful the island is.
Travelling the whole way by car around Madeira takes around two hours and you can rent cars from hatchbacks to sports cars driving the island in a convertible is amazing.
The weather in Madeira again varies which is amazing for such a tiny island, up on the north side of the island up in the mountains it is very windy and cold and often rains, as you descend into Funchal and the southern side it's humid and 30 degrees celsius. My Uncle told me of how it got so hot in Funchal one year the entire island headed up into the mountains because it was hard to breathe.
Forrest fires in Madeira again are a risk like Tenerife, this year a huge fire broke out and drifted some of the way into Funchal old town destroying twenty houses.
So another day and another location visited, tomorrow we are at sea again on our way to the final location of the cruise La Coruna, Spain. I hope you have all been enjoying this blog and thank you for the many upvotes and new follwers since I started. So this is goodbye from Madeira, Portugal. See you all in my next blog.
Beautiful pictures and memories shared.
Thank you
