Reflections on Lammas Ecovillage

View this post on Hive: Reflections on Lammas Ecovillage

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

What an amazing place, and so well presented. Thank you! One thing that makes me a bit sad is how bureaucracy and regulations make it difficult for such types of projects to be shooting out of the ground everywhere... which is what we would really need IMO. The land around Lammas has gone up in value? I wonder if it may have something to do with the project itself. An intact ecosystem is certainly more appealing to anyone (even if they are not living off the land), and is usually taken for granted before it's destroyed.

Yup - there's a fairly well know picture of Tao Wimbush (scuse spelling) taking the planning docs to the hearing in a wheelbarrow of boxfiles. Kind of illustrates how silly it is.

Somonen I was speaking to on site said the land had gone up a lot - they set precedent - I can't remember by how much - I think it may be about 20-30% more relative to land in neigbouring counties - up to around $13K an acre in dollars.

Lammas = sheep in Finnish.

I wonder if that's deliberate, it was degraded pasture land previously, perhaps it's to reflect the origins.

Great to know about this place, definitely a lifestyle that I'm curious about for the family. There are a few eco home educating communities I've heard of, and I sometimes get the urge to just drop everything and move to something like that.

I'd probably be keen to visit this place at some point! Something closer to London would definitely be a lot more realistic for us though

Funny when I read 'sometimes get the urge to drop everything and move' I instantly though 'you'll never be able to give up London'! Then you finished on the 'ideally closer to London' quote.

I do love these places but I'm a SE lad at heart - TBH what I really want is a couple of acres in Kent - unfortunately I don't have half a million to buy a house and some pasture land down there. And for that price I certainly wouldn't get the two together.

The other thing about Lammas is that it's 10 years old now and there's hardly been an explosion of similar devz - shows you how hard it is.

Best get on that allotment wait list. You'll be on plot by 2024 if you get yr name down now!

Hahha that's because of me always going back and forth of wanting to and not wanting to stay close to family in London. Shhh, don't tell them that hahaha... Just kidding really, we actually now live just outside London and love it. Distance wise from London, it's perfect. Suits well for us only needing to go into London to work every now and then. No eco communities near here though :(

I've always wanted land that I can build on, and would love to just join forces with likeminded folks and buy a property with lots of land or a few acres together and start a community. Lots of logistics to it I know, but maybe this way, we can stay closer to London for something like this ;)

Oh yay! Let's set up a steem eco-community for real!

First step set up an account - have to have a think about the namem

Second step - accumulate about 200K steem to kick start the land purchase. That figure wouldn't be enough but it'd be a start!

This does sound plausible you know. Could utilize Fundition? So many homesteaders and experts in these fields already on Steem, I'm sure there'd be interest in a UK Steem eco-community.

It's something I've thought about before - like steempark 4.0

Fascinating read. What I don’t understand is why they need to be classified a way that requires all that reporting. Why not just be a collection of houses built on a plot of land as far as the government is concerned? Do they get some special deductions or tax considerations being classified differently?

No not at all - but keep in mind that it's practically impossible to self-build build cheap houses on previously pasture land like they've done in the UK, so their reward is reducing their housing costs by about 80% of the norm!

Why is it hard to do? Because it isn’t zoned for housing? These things vary so much from place to place.

Btw, sorry about all the duplicate comments. Steemit glitching and saying it wasn’t posted.

That's basically it - English planning law is all about protecting the countryside, you're very unlikely to get permission to build a residential development on zoned agricultural land.

I've done that with partiko myself don't worry! It'll give me a higher ranking for the UA round!

wow brilliant photography. actually this ecovillage really very evergreen. i also love to relaxation for my time with nature. anyway thanks to share this.

Thanks - I'd never regarded myself as a brilliant photographer, I just knocked them out on my Samsung.

i believe camera is not a issue. main issue mind set. hope your mind full fill perfect for Photography. anyway thanks for feedback.
