Priceless Truths on the Communion 3
As we grow in our relationship with Christ and as we continue in our walk of faith, we need to develop a better understanding of the things we do as believers.
One of the things that we, as believers in Christ do, is eating the body of Jesus and drinking His blood.
This spiritual exercise is called partaking of The Lords Table and also sometimes called the Communion.
My aim in this series is to help you better appreciate the significance of the communion.
1 Corinthians 11
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Below are some take home lessons on The Lord's Table from this very instructive passage of scripture.
We Overcome Evil with Good
Notice from the Bible text that in the same night in which Jesus was betrayed, He fed his disciples including the man who was going to betray Him in a few hours time.
Judas was the person who gave Jesus away and he was one of those who ate the bread and drank the wine (Luke 22:20-23) that night.
Jesus knew he'd betray Him, yet Jesus fed him the same night. There was no hatred in Jesus' heart towards Judas.
The communion reminds me to feed my enemies; it reminds me that we have been called to overcome evil with good.
Thanksgiving Over Meals
Notice that Jesus took the bread and GAVE THANKS. Many years ago I noticed with excitement that Jesus prayed a different way over food than many believers did.
Jesus usually gave thanks over food (Matthew 15:36). At other times He'd bless (speak a blessing into and over) the food (Matthew 14:19).
He didn't do weird things like bind the devil in the plate or cast demons out of food like some believers do.
The communion reminds me to simply give thanks to the Father for food and speak a blessing into/over it like Jesus did.
"broken for you"
If you and I go shopping in a supermarket and I pay for you as we exit the supermarket, it means you no longer have to pay for what you bought.
Well, Jesus' body was broken FOR YOU. It means that yours doesn't have to be broken anymore.
When His body was broken - beating, injured, wounded and battered - it was all FOR YOU.
What that means is that because of what Jesus did you and I have a right to experience preservation and perfect health.
The communion reminds me that total physical health and wellness have been purchased for me by the sacrifice of Jesus.
"do this in remembrance of Me"
This was the instruction Jesus gave. I ought to be remembering Jesus when I take the communion else I'd be in disobedience
At the communion table we should be remembering Jesus and what He did on the cross, not ourselves and what we've done on the earth.
It's about Jesus!
If I'm remembering (or focusing my mind on) me and how I might not be very qualified to eat the bread and drink the blood because I haven't been exactly good enough, then I have totally missed the whole point.
I should eat His body and drink His blood in remembrance of Him, not in remembrance of me!
Also, if I'm remembering (or focusing my mind on) me and how I'm very qualified to eat the bread and drink the blood because I think I've been good enough, then again I have totally missed the whole point.
I should eat the bread and drink the blood in remembrance of Jesus, not in remembrance of me!
Word!!! So true! Love this:
Give thanks from a grateful heart and not a vengeful one. Partake of the communion in remembrance of Jesus and the ultimate sacrifice he made for us... Great write up.
@mosunomotunde Thanks ma'am. It's all about Jesus :)
