Speak Right (V) - To Verify The "Truth"

in #grammar6 years ago

Pleasant evening to you on the other side!

It's good to be back with another edition of Speak Right. Indeed, good grammar is good business.

Tonight, we'd be looking at the correct construction of a very popular saying:

"To Verify The Truth".

E.g
Tom, help verify the truth of the information X

OR

Tom, help verify the truth about the information X

While this might look or sound correct, it is however pertinent to note that such constructions connotes tautology - it is needless to include the word "Truth".

"To Verify" - means, to ascertain or prove or confirm the truth or fact.

Hence, it is more proper to say:

"Tom, Help verify the information"

This means you're telling Tom to help confirm if the information is true.

Hope someone finds this useful
