Marseille And Atletico Madrid In Europa League Final showdown
Olympique Marseille will be hoping that playing at home in France would give them an edge over Atletico Madrid when the two teams face-off in the final of the Europa League tonight.
This will be the first meeting between the two sides in close to a decade, having met in during the groups stages of the 2008/2009 season when Atletico came atop with a win and a draw.
Tournament favourites, Atletico Madrid will be looking to go level with fellow Spanish side, Sevilla as the teams to have won the most Europa League titles if they win a third trophy tonight.
Marseille have been in excellent form this season and will also look to be the first French side to win a title in Europe since PSG in the 1995/1996 season. They are however looking to avoid a third finals defeat, having lost in their previous two, against Parma in 1998/1999 and Valencia in 2003.
Rudi Garcia has won 51 of his 95 games in charge of the French side and Diego Simeone will also be looking to avoid a third European final defeat, having lost out to local rivals, Real Madrid in the finals of the 2014 and 2016 Champions League.
Marseille have won just four of their last fifteen meetings against Spanish oppositions and two of those came in the two-legged victory against Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16.
MY PREDICTION
It's a tough call as it promises to be a very tight game, compact with both team playing cautiously.
They both have stars who can lighten up the encounter. Antoine Griezman and Diego Costa were instrumental in Atleti's semifinal victory over Arsenal. Marseille can also bank on captain, Dimitri Payet and Flora Thauvin, who have both been excellent since joining up. Payet has scored 10 goals and assisted 24 this season already.
Atletico are favourites but I'm looking to see am upset.
Marseille 1 - 2 Atletico Madrid
