Egypt To Host 2019 AFCON
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that Egypt will be hosting the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Egypt who will be hosting the tournament for the fifth time fended off competition in the bidding process from their only competitor, South Africa.
CAF had decided to name a new host for the 2019 AFCON after the initial hosts, Cameroon were stripped off the rights.
It would be recalled the rights to host the 2019 AFCON was taken away from Cameroon in November due to slow progress in preparations.
Cameroon had initially won the rights to host the tournament to consist of 16 teams but CAF's decision to increase the number of participants to 24 teams destabilised the preparations.
The two previous hosts for the subsequent tournaments have now been asked to postpone their own hosting rights with Cameroon given the rights to host the 2021 tournament.
Ivory Coast who were billed to host in 2021 will postpone their hosting till 2023 and Guinea will now host on 2025 instead of 2023.
Ivory Coast have however said they will be challenging the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.
