Ultimate Oreo Showdown - Triple Tested #4

My Fellow Steemians,

What’s your favourite part of an Oreo? Is it the biscuit? The creme filling?

Or is it the marriage of the two?

If your answer was neither then maybe you thought I was talking about boring, old chocolate biscuit with white creme filling Oreos. We are no longer bound to the uninventive cookies of our childhood. Over the past few years Oreo has been churning out unique flavour after unique flavour for their patrons. Different flavoured biscuits, crazy flavoured creme fillings and even as far as to make a chocolate chip Oreo!

I thought it would be important work to take a handful of Oreo flavours currently on the market and pit them against each other. Which is the best at accomplishing their mission statement as laid out on their packaging? We’re about to find out.

I picked three cookies that were close to each other in intent — fruity, pastry goodies. The two pie themed cookies have a graham flavoured biscuit and the jelly donut has a golden Oreo biscuit. No chocolate here people! Let’s see if they’re worth the hype.

When I opened the package of the Jelly Donut cookies I was amazed that it actually smelled like a donut. I opened up the cookie to see the red spot in the center of the white cream to indicate the jelly center. That’s where the positives for these cookies end. The cookie tasted like nothing. The cookie was bland and the filling was bland. I don’t think a blindfolded taste test between this and a regular golden Oreo would be very telling. Big disappointment.

When you open the package of Key Lime Pie cookies you get hit with a super sweet aroma. It’s pungent. Twisting off the top biscuit reveals an intense lime green coloured cream filling. The cream definitely has flavour, mostly sweet with a hint of lime candy flavour. It’s like they tried to alter the naturally tart flavour of key lime with excessive sweetness. The cookie was a disappointment. Although it’s colour profile is darker than a golden Oreo and looks like graham it has zero flavour. The biscuit added nothing to the overall flavour of the cookie, all you get is the lime filling.

Our third contender also has a sweet aroma and bright coloured cream filling, this time purple. The flavour of the cream is much more balanced. It tastes exactly like the blueberry filling of a blueberry pie and not overly sweetened. If you like blueberry flavour it’s very pleasant. Again the graham flavoured biscuit is a disappointment. It has no flavour and adds nothing to the overall cookie experience.

At the end of the day the only cookie I could recommend is the Blueberry Pie Oreo. In terms of the flavoured cream filling it achieved its goal with flying colours. It was accurate without tasting too sweet.

That’s all for this Oreo taste test but there will be no end to the odd Oreo flavours they will release. I will not shy away from any challenge Oreo sets. I’m looking at you Waffles and Syrup Oreos!
