Ultimate Jumbo Muffin Showdown - Triple Tested #5

My fellow Steemians,

The other day I was thinking about muffins. The muffins that are offered in cafes and bakeries are always these jumbo things that are 5 times bigger than anything you could ever hope to make at home. Or so I thought. After some Googling it turns out there are recipes to create these bakery treats from scratch at home.

I found two types of recipes: recipes to make 6 jumbo muffins using a jumbo muffin pan and recipes to make bakery style muffins using a standard 12 cup muffin pan. I decided to put both of these to the test up against an actual bakery bought muffin. To execute this test the muffins will be prepared in 2 flavours, chocolate chip and blueberry. Let’s see which is the best bakery style muffin.

Store Bought: Starbucks Chocolate Chunk Muffin

These muffins rose with a nice domed top on them. They definitely look the part. The texture was great, very soft and fluffy. Not a very complex flavour going on. There is nothing in the muffin batter to compete with the strong chocolate flavour which these muffins have in spades. And by using mini chocolate chips you get evenly dispersed chocolate in every bite.

This muffin also doesn’t skimp on the chocolate but has a little something extra going for it as well. The muffin batter has a slightly more pronounced presence, adds a bit of richness. The money is the golden exterior with its sweet and buttery flavour. The texture on this muffin is also very soft and fluffy, makes for a decadent treat.

When we decided the Starbucks Chocolate Chunk was the best bakery purchased chocolate chip muffin it was because it had a superior chocolate flavour. Where Starbucks falters is the texture, it was denser and a bit drier than homemade.

These muffins came out very sweet. But you can’t argue with the undeniable blueberry flavour that it has going on. It’s a soft muffin with a nice sugary crust on the top from the streusel topping. It rose with a nice domed top which gives it an impressive look for a homemade standard muffin.

I was super impressed with how these came out, both looks and flavour. It is the most impressive muffin I’ve ever seen with its huge round top. I mean come on it’s the size of a baseball! This muffin had the most complex flavour of every muffin I tried. The batter has cinnamon and nutmeg which provided an interesting flavour to balance with the blueberry. Overall it wasn’t very sweet which was refreshing. This recipe knows what it wants to be — it’s no bald cupcake, it’s a muffin. And actually it’s not even bald, it has a buttery streusel topping which adds a nice crunch. This muffin was a good eat.

The blueberry muffin that was chosen as the best store bought had the best amount of blueberry flavour. It was surprising how many we tried that were bland and didn’t have a strong flavour of their namesake ingredient. The Williams Fresh Cafe blueberry muffin has a lot of blueberry flavour but unfortunately it comes off a bit artificial. It doesn’t have the same fresh berry flavour a homemade product has. The texture was almost too fluffy verging on delicate.

The Winners

All the homemade muffins were a superior product over the bakery bought ones. The flavours were more authentic and the textures were more satisfying and consistent. Either of the homemade muffins would be a good choice for taste. But don’t be looking for any miracles using a standard muffin pan. To get those big, luxurious muffins you need to go big and get yourself a jumbo muffin pan.

My personal favourite was the jumbo blueberry muffin. Not only did it look the part but it was just the best tasting muffin, hands down.
