Power Stone Collection (PSP) - Rerez

In 1999 I got myself a Sega Dreamcast and I consider that one of the best consoles ever made. But one of the problems with the Dreamcast was its lifespan was drastically cut short by the arrival of the PlayStation 2. Now there are a lot of really cool games on the Dreamcast to this day. You can still go back and find a bunch of them. In fact consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and even the PC have re-releases of old Sega games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Crazy Taxi. One of the coolest games that was ever released on the Dreamcast was Power Stone. Power Stone hasn't seen any re-releases on the major platforms except for one portable version on the PSP — the Power Stone Collection.

The basic plot of Power Stone is that there's this treasure called the power stones that a bunch of adventurers are trying to collect because of a legend that says finding them will make all of their wishes come true. The first Power Stone is a one-on-one 3D fighting game that gives the player full 360 degree movement in each level. While many other fighting games restrict you to a 2D view to fight this game doesn't. And while it's not the first game to offer that perspective it really did a great job using it. Every stage has unique events and items that can be used to win each match. What really steals this show though is Power Stone 2.

The sequel is kind of like Super Smash Brothers. A maximum of four players can be on the screen at once with lots of items spawning all over the place from guns to skateboards and tanks and some of the levels in the sequel are crazy, completely changing the way they look. One stage starts up in an Egyptian looking tomb that eventually turns into a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, changing the way the game is played completely. I could go on and on about how awesome these games are and really if you like Super Smash Brothers and enjoyed it a lot then finding a copy of Power Stone 2 for the Dreamcast is a great idea.

Now the Power Stone Collection on PSP, despite it being portable, has way more to offer than the original Dreamcast titles. First off if you were a fan of the VMU games you could download and play on the go, well they're still here. Just modified a little for the PSP screen. Both Power Stone and Power Stone 2 can be played in widescreen, a feature not in the originals. And there's also the addition of extra characters for both games that were not in the original Dreamcast releases. The Power Stone Collection for the PSP is the ultimate version of Power Stone that exists. It simply has way more features than anything else you're going to find and it offers both games in one package which is a great idea.

I think it's a shame that the Power Stone Collection is only available on the PSP. This game is awesome, it has a lot of features that are way better than the Dreamcast version. But I think it would do better on the consoles or the PC, something with a larger screen. But if you're a big fan of the Power Stone series and the games that came out on the Dreamcast this is seriously a must have. It has everything that the Dreamcast version has and a lot more. Go out and find a copy today if you still can.
