Three movies I did not see

in #teamsouthafrica6 years ago (edited)

I love movies! However, times are changing and I do not go to movie theatres very often anymore. We now have Netflix and Showmax and staying at home is convenient. Time is also a factor and I prefer watching an episode for 40 minutes instead of a movie for 120 minutes.

There are three movies I did not see that everyone else saw. It is unlikely to change, so even if you read this many years from now it is quite possibly still true. Or maybe you can convince me to make an effort...

1. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

This movie tells the story of Elliott, a lonely boy who befriends an extra-terrestrial, dubbed E.T., who is stranded on earth. Elliott and his brother and sister help E.T. return to his home planet while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and of course, the government.

Released in 1985 it is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Widely acclaimed by critics as a timeless story of friendship, it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

My reason for not seeing it

Everyone who saw it at the time told me how they cried during the sad goodbye at the end.

You may not know much about me except for what my profile tells you. Here is another tidbit of information.

I cry every day. I cry when I discover what is going on in people's lives. I cry when they suffer or struggle. I cry when they celebrate. Not while I'm in a conversation with a person but when they leave. This literally happens every day.

I do not pay money to cry! Never!

The list of sad movies I refuse to watch is long. But this one is the first one I remember choosing not to watch.

2. Jaws

The movie Jaws is about a giant man-eating great white shark who attacks beachgoers on Amity Island, a fictional New England summer resort town, prompting the local police chief to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter.
The mechanical sharks used in filming suffered many malfunctions. As a result, it was decided to mostly suggest the animal's presence, employing an ominous, minimalistic theme to indicate the shark's impending appearances. This music is used to this day to create a sense of impending danger.

Considered one of the greatest films ever made, it won several awards for its music and editing. Jaws was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars (1977). It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

My reason for not seeing it

It is scary! Do I need to say more? Why do people like to be frightened? Is real life not scary enough?

Anyway, I have never been drawn to scary things. I look in the mirror when I wake up in the morning and that is enough for me. And I've been married for nearly 18 years now. Fear of trivial things has no meaning in my world...

Why would I pay money to be frightened when I can forget to buy milk on the way home for free?

3. The Godfather

[Source credit]

The Godfather stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino as the leaders of a fictional New York crime family. The story, spanning 1945 to 1955, chronicles the family under the patriarch Vito Corleone, focusing on the transformation of Michael Corleone from reluctant family outsider to a ruthless mafia boss.

The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema and one of the most influential, especially in the gangster genre. It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1990, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema (behind Citizen Kane) by the American Film Institute. It was followed by sequels The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990).

I have never seen this but I can quote characters from the movie. In fact, I have quoted the film for I have heard quoted so often, I felt I could.

I regret not seeing this and may someday correct it.

I know there may be youngsters reading here who have never heard of these movies. The thought makes me feel old but however old you are I would want to hear from you.

  1. Which movies do you regret not seeing?
  2. Which movie do you think I should make an effort to see?

Thank you for reading!

I have seen jaws. Yes it is scary, thrilling. I didnt enjoy it because i have to cover my face in order not to be scared/thrilled. The purpose of the movie is defeated. I am into romantic-comedy movies. Upvoted by rubelynmacion
