Drugs can alter the communication between cells in our brain and that disruption affects our body in many ways. The drug has to first enter the bloodstream and reach the brain but the drug has to pass the blood-brain barrier. The drug has to have some chemical composition that allows it to pass the barrier and when it does it interferes with synapses and neurons.
Neurons are brain cells that havedendrites,nucleus and axons. Synapses are placed on dendrites and axons, these allow neurons to communicate through neurotransmitters. These signals affect our mood, behaviour and cognition but they can either hold back the neuron or stimulate the neuron which creates a brand new electrochemical signal that spreads all over the network. If you constantly consume the drug it may permanently rewire your neural network and develop an addiction.

Self medication leads to addiction and this numb the brain and in worst cases leads to amnesia.
