A Letter To Young Campaign Managers

in #life6 years ago (edited)

I managed my first campaign when I was 21. Since then I've worked on about a dozen since. Here is a letter I sent to a 20 year old campaign manager recently as he embarks on some of the craziness I tossed myself into:

"Here is some advise I wish someone had given me when I was in your position a few years ago.

You have embarked on something extremely rare, always remember that the campaign is important, but family, your grades, health, etc still take priority because the day after the campaign you are ultimately just left with yourself. People will give you a hard time because of your age, let your work define yourself and be willing to forgive their behavior and treatment of you even when you don't want to. At times you will feel overwhelmed, a sign of intelligence is knowing how ignorant you are about the world, so always be willing to ask for help.

Lastly, when you need to rest but you want to keep working, the temptation to lay on a couch in front of the TV while working on your laptop will be tempting, but you need to separate work from rest and let yourself recharge, the world won't end if you give yourself an hour. Lastly, there will always, always be another campaign, there is nothing wrong with taking an extended period of time to pursue other things you are passionate about."

Thats all folks...
